New Contract Tracing Protocols
On Monday, March 14, we introduced a new process for reporting positive COVID-19 cases for students who were on a Los Rios campus or facility within 14 days of their initial positive test collection date.

Any student who was on campus within 14 days of their positive test collection date should submit the online COVID-19 Reporting Form (Appendix C), which collects information about the person's vaccination status, symptoms, and whereabouts on campus. After they submit the online form, it is routed to the appropriate person for contact tracing.

Additionally, any student who has been exposed to COVID-19 (either potentially or via close contact) can use the new interactive COVID Decision Chart to find out how long they should isolate and what their next steps are. You can find both forms at losrios.edu/reportCOVID.

If you have any questions regarding this new reporting process, contact COVIDTestingAccommodation@losrios.edu.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Environmental Health Policy from CSU Monterey Bay, and I recently got my Master's in Environmental Science from CSU Dominguez Hills. I grew up in the Land Park neighborhood and love everything about Sacramento. At work, I am most passionate about environmental justice issues and working with low-income, minority groups. Outside of work, I love traveling and spending time with family and friends."

City Theatre Highlighted in SNR
The Sacramento News and Review highlighted Sacramento City College and Folsom Lake College’s theater programs in their article "The Show DID Go On: How Passion, Tech and Resolve Saved Local College Theater Programs During the Pandemic."

Luther Hanson, professor of Theatre Arts and Film at Sacramento City College, also juggled technology to connect with his drama students.

"'For most of the first year, most theaters were just trying to improve on the zoom theater or other versions of that,' Hanson observed. 'We all got better at the technology to present plays. I thought it was fun: We would get into costume in our own little homes, get all set up in front of our green screens, and then had the actors, sound and video crew check in.'"

TherActivist: They/Them/Theirs/Film and Discussion
All are invited to a discussion with Dana TherActivist Johnson, MSW, author and filmmaker of the memoir, TherActivist: They/Them/Theirs, and Khalid White about how to take on a “therapeutic activist” approach while serving and empowering people of color, LGBTQ+ communities, and marginalized populations. The Zoom event takes place Thursday, March 24, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. TherActivist: They/Them/Theirs shines a light on the intersections of identity, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, as well as gender expression and social activism against the backdrop of racism, anti-LGBTQ+ violence, and social exclusion.

The Global Makers series continues with the next event featuring Sharon Clausson, inventor of the Copenhagen Solar Cooker, on Wednesday, March 23, at 9:00 am. The series will feature Global Makers of solar cookers and dehydrators to learn about their creative responses to environmental crises, economic scarcity, gender oppression, and global inequity, while exploring the meaning of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). There will be a giveaway of a Copenhagen Solar Cooker to a student in attendance.

Develop Healthy Habits
March is National Nutrition Month, a month-long nutrition education and information campaign focusing on the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating and physical activity habits. This year’s theme is “Celebrate a World of Flavors.”

The United States is experiencing a dramatic increase in obesity rates with 40% of 20 to 39 year-olds qualifying. Physical inactivity and unhealthy dietary habits have the greatest impact on your weight and can significantly impact your future health. Some healthy eating barriers college students have identified are time constraints, unhealthy snacking, the convenience of high-calorie foods, stress, the higher price of healthy foods, and ease of accessibility to junk food.

Here are some quick tips to get you started on a healthier path:
  • Plan your meals and snacks for the week
  • Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go
  • Check out menus online in advance so you can make more healthful food and drink choices when away from home
  • Try new flavors and foods from around the world
  • Park farther out to get more steps in
  • Catch up with a friend or family member over a walk
