JN.1 Variant Prevalent; Updated Vaccines Offer Protection

The CDC estimates that the COVID-19 subvariant JN.1 accounts for approximately 85.7% of COVID cases in the U.S. as of January 19, making JN.1 the most widely circulating variant of SARS-CoV2 in the country and globally. There is no evidence at present that JN.1 causes more severe disease than previous variants. The updated COVID-19 vaccine offers protection against this latest variant.

Positive Trends: Decline in COVID-19 Hospitalizations, Deaths, and Emergency Visits

The greatest number of COVID-19 cases continue to be seen in adults 75 years and older.

Long-term Care Facilities confirmed COVID-19 cases remain high at 10/1000 cases for the week ending January 21.

Vaccination remains crucial for safeguarding public health. Individuals are considered up to date with just one dose of the updated 2023-2024 Moderna, Pfizer, or Novavax vaccine.

CDC Expands V-safe to Monitor Three New Vaccines

CDC’s V-safe recently expanded to monitor three new vaccines: maternal RSV vaccine, RSV vaccines for older adults and the updated COVID-19 vaccine.

V-safe allows anyone who gets vaccinated with these vaccines to enroll and receive personalized health check-ins. Healthcare providers play a vital role in encouraging people who get vaccinated to register for V-safe. Data gathered through V-safe allow the CDC to provide timely and transparent communication about side effects following vaccination to public health officials, healthcare providers, and the public.
