Black History Month – Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
February 1st – National Freedom Day - This day commemorates President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the joint resolution that established the Constitution’s 13th Amendment abolishing slavery in the United States. It is a day when, thanks to the decades-long push of Richard R. Wright and his fellow civil rights advocates, Americans commemorate their dedication to the ideal of freedom for all.
February 3rd – National Wear Red Day - The first Friday in February, during what is considered American Heart Month, many Americans wear red to spread awareness in hopes of helping to eradicate heart disease and stroke in millions of women all over the nation.
February 4th – World Cancer Day – This day is celebrated internationally to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. This year’s theme is “Close the Care Gap”, focusing on equal access to cancer treatment for all.
February 5th – Lunar New Year Lantern Festival - On the 15th day of the first lunar month, two weeks after the Lunar New Year, the Lantern Festival is celebrated. It marks the first full moon of the new lunar year and the end of the Lunar New Year (Spring Festival) period.
February 5th- 6th - Tu B'Shevat - Tu B'Shvat is a Jewish holiday occurring on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat. It is also called Rosh Hashanah La'Ilanot, literally 'New Year of the Trees'. In contemporary Israel, the day is celebrated as an ecological awareness day, and trees are planted in celebration.
February 6th – 10th – National School Counseling Week – The 2023 theme is "School Counselors: Helping Students Dream Big"
