Worship with us this Sunday
March 13, 2022 | 10:00AM

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday. Remember to move your clocks ahead one hour,

Worship In-Person in the Sanctuary or on Facebook Live… or later on YouTube.

Join us in the sanctuary or virtually. It’s the second Sunday of Lent - on our way to Holy Week and Easter. Our scriptures are Luke 8:43-48 (woman finds healing after 12 years) and John 11:1-4, 17-21, 28-36 (grieving siblings Mary, Martha and Lazarus).

Our Lenten theme is Jesus Does. How about you? as we look at Jesus’ life and how we can model our lives after his. We will light our Lenten Candles.

The Parkway UCC Church Council held their monthly meeting via Zoom at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 28, 2022. Below are some of the matters that were discussed.

  • The current financial state was reviewed and discussed. A motion was passed to accept the January Treasurer's Report.

  • The Stewardship Committee, Interfaith Team, Audio-Visual Team were all recognized for their commitment and hard work.

  • The COVID Response Team continues to evaluate protocols. As of now, masks are still required within the building. The team will meet in March to discuss new developments and institute appropriate changes.

  • The Audio-Visual Project in the sanctuary is ongoing and is expected to be completed in May once all the back-ordered audio equipment has been installed. Contributions are needed to offset the expense.

  • The Afghan family that the Interfaith Team has helped welcome is settling into their new St. Louis home.

  • Building and safety protocols were discussed. A motion was made and approved to have a keypad lock (similar to the one at the front entry) installed at the back door near the Music Room in order to limit unlocked doors on Sunday morning to the front doors.

  • Council discussed which current Council members will be staying and which will be leaving Council in June.

Some people give things up for Lent in order to have more time, focus, resources for the more important things in life. Other people add things that are a blessing to others and themselves (see opportunity below). Either way, there are wonderful things happening this season because people are being more intentional.

All through history, there have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they seem invincible. But in the end, they always fall. Always.

A Protestant moves into a Catholic neighborhood. It's a pretty open-minded and welcoming community, and everyone gets along great.
The first time an issue presents itself is when Lent rolls around. During Lent, the Catholics in the neighborhood all swear off red meat. Every day at lunch, however, as his neighbors were eating cold tuna sandwiches, the Protestant would grill himself a big, juicy steak that could be smelled throughout the neighborhood.
Several weeks into Lent, the Catholics meet after Mass to discuss the issue. They didn't want to be unneighborly, but the smell was really driving them crazy.
Then, one of them comes up with a suggestion: since the Protestant moved to a Catholic community, maybe he'd be open to converting. While it wouldn't fix the problem that year, it would make next year's Lent go much more smoothly. After much debate, they agree to bring the offer to the Protestant.
To their surprise and delight, he is completely open to converting. He goes through the process and gets rebaptized as a Catholic. The entire neighborhood shows up for his confirmation, where the priest splashes him with holy water while saying, "You were born a Protestant ... you were raised a Protestant ... and now you're a Catholic."
The next year goes smoothly, and the whole neighborhood gets along great. Then, Lent rolls around again. As everyone is at home with their cold tuna sandwiches, a smell permeates the air: charcoal, wood chips, STEAK. Confused, everyone rushes over to the convert's house.
They find him standing over his grill, a juicy steak cooking away. He's splashing the slab of meat with beer, and the neighbors hear him speaking in a solemn voice.
"You were born a cow ... you were raised a cow ... and now you're a fish."
Video Project Update and Request for Contributions

Parkway has now entered the 21st century with its new video system, which streams Sunday services and other programs. We’ve eliminated our previous patchwork system and its many frustrations. We’ve even relieved our pastor from camera operating duties!  If you are Covid-concerned, shut in for other reasons, or a PUCC friend outside of St. Louis, you can now participate directly in worship and the life of our congregation.

We all owe thanks to the team headed by Kent Tallyn that selected the video system, helped install it (at significant savings to the church), and continues to refine it as the final components are installed. This system serves us today, and will also help Parkway better serve its members and friends and carry out its mission in the coming years.

This approximately $30,000 project, which arose unexpectedly because of Covid-19, fell outside of our normal church budget. It is now about two-thirds funded. About half of the project was funded out of memorial funds (primarily the Ruth Murray fund), and we have received another $2,650 in special gifts from members. We still need to cover final payments in the range of $10,000, which will become due after audio enhancements are installed, hopefully in May.

Please consider making a contribution to help complete this project. Please designate your gift with the notation “video project.” Thank you!

For those who may wish to donate stock, our new securities donation procedures are explained below.

Stock Donation Procedures
Parkway has been working for some time with United Church Funds, a UCC agency, which we are now using, instead of commercial brokers, for donations of stocks or other exchange-traded securities to the church.

If you wish to donate stocks to Parkway, you can do so by following these steps:

1. Send UCF (by email to info@ucfunds.org or by Fax to 332-219-8758) either a current account statement, or information about the stocks you wish to donate and the account in which it is held. Specify that you intend to make a donation to Parkway UCC, Town & Country, Missouri. UCF will review your information and contact you about the next steps.

2. Ask your broker or financial institution to transfer stocks to UCF using the information below:
BNYM/Pershing, LLC, DTC# 0443,
Account # N7M001442
Account name: United Church Funds, Inc.
For Further Credit To: (Parkway United Church of Christ / Account No. 381574)

3. Notify both UCF and Dawn Friedmann, Parkway’s bookkeeper (dawn@parkwayucc.org) once you have requested the transfer. In this notice, you can specify any particular uses for the funds (e.g., the video project).

After this process is complete, your donated stocks will be immediately sold, and the proceeds will be deposited into Parkway’s account at UCF. Because UCF is a non-profit and ministry of the UCC, it does not charge for its services, although an SEC fee and broker fee is applied at the time of sale.
Your gift will be acknowledged in writing by PUCC. The amount of a charitable tax deduction is usually based on the average price of the security on the date of donation. Of course, you should consult your tax advisor regarding all tax issues including charitable deductions.

Questions? Contact Mark Sableman: 314-602-6103 | msableman@att.net or Dawn Friedman: 314-872-9330 | dawn@parkwayucc.org. Thank you for using this means of supporting Parkway’s mission!
