Florida's Latest Data on Safety, Health & Sustainability
|
|
According to the Florida Chamber Safety Council's Florida Workplace Safety Report released in 2020,
Safety: When we account for the racial make-up of the workforce, the fatality rate for Hispanic or Latino workers is highest, and for white workers the second highest. Statistically, Hispanic workers are more likely to die at work in Florida with a fatality rate of 3.5 deaths per 100,000 workers between 2011 and 2018. On average, 3.1 white workers died on the job per 100,000 white employees in the workforce. This highlights an opportunity to focus training efforts on those industries that employ the Hispanic community and ensure that safety protocols and training are accessible. This should include ensuring that training materials and safety labeling are provided in Spanish.
Health: Diabetes can increase risk and delay healing in the case of a workplace injury. The age adjusted value for Florida is 10.5 percent. Across the nation diabetes prevalence varies from 6.6 percent in Colorado to 13.5 percent in West Virginia. Florida ranks 34th lowest (17th highest) out of all 50 states in diabetes prevalence. The 10 states with the highest rates of diabetes are all in the south.
Sustainability: Renewable energy sources include sunlight, wind, rain, tides and waves, and geothermal heat. Florida ranks 44th in the nation for renewable energy production per capita. With Florida’s abundant sunshine, increased renewable energy in the future is possible.

Litigation Update: COVID-19 Vaccination and Testing Emergency Temporary Standard
On December 17, 2021, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals lifted the stay on OSHA's COVID-19 vaccination and testing Emergency Temporary Standard originally put in place on November 5, 2021. OSHA can now once again implement this vital workplace health standard, which will protect the health of workers by mitigating the spread of the unprecedented virus in the workplace.
To account for any uncertainty created by the stay, OSHA is exercising enforcement discretion with respect to the compliance dates of the ETS. To provide employers with sufficient time to come into compliance, OSHA will not issue citations for noncompliance with any requirements of the ETS before January 10 and will not issue citations for noncompliance with the standard’s testing requirements before February 9, so long as an employer is exercising reasonable, good faith efforts to come into compliance with the standard. OSHA will work closely with the regulated community to provide compliance assistance, read more here.
