Dear Normandale Families,
You know spring has arrived at Normandale when the snow has melted off the playground and Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) testing is about to begin!
Next week 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) in Reading. The following week these same students will take the Math MCA and in the first week of May, 5th graders will take the Science MCA. Teachers in grades 3-5 will share dates and details with families via their newsletters.
| |
Next month students in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 will complete the last round of FAST math assessments. Similarly, FAST reading assessments will also be administered to students in grades 3, 4 and 5 next month.
These standardized assessments are used to help EPS and Normandale gauge student progress across the district and over time. The MCAs also provide valuable information about individual student progress for next year’s teachers. In addition to these standardized measures, Normandale K-5 teachers are also busy gathering math and literacy data via less formal measures. At the lower grades these assessments target foundational literacy and math skills like letter sounds, nonsense words, decomposing (subtraction) and place value. At the upper grades, curriculum-based measures are used to gauge reading fluency, accuracy and comprehension. Regardless of the grade-level, these data points are used to help make instructional decisions for students. We hope to build on this momentum next year when we start the school year off again with Connect and Assess conferences on August 28 and 29.

What: Normandale’s Annual carnival, “La Kermesse” is one of our students’ FAVORITE school events of the year. We have games, prizes, activities, food trucks, a DJ & SO MUCH FUN! All profits from the event support our award winning French immersion program.
When: Saturday, May 13th from 3-6 pm
Where: Around the Edina Community Center Gyms (backside of Normandale).
Who: Anyone! Generally families attend together for an afternoon/evening of fun. This includes younger siblings who don’t attend Normandale (yet!) and grandparents.
How can I help?
- Volunteer for a shift! Carnival takes TONS of volunteers to happen. The most volunteers are needed to run/monitor the games and these are broken into shifts so you can also enjoy the carnival too! There will be a volunteer sign-up sheet coming soon.
-
Financial Contributions - we are looking for donations which will be used for Raffle Baskets. No amount is too small! You can buy raffle basket items directly through the La Kermesse Amazon Wishlist or submit cash donations to fund raffle basket items through Membership Toolkit.
Thank you all so much for your consideration and generosity! We can't wait to gather as a community. Please look for Facebook posts and emails in the coming days and weeks for volunteer signup and more updates.

STUDENTS VISITING FROM BORDEAUX
Some of our Normandale 5th graders will be participating in our “Back to Back” exchange program with schools in Bordeaux, France in June. As a part of this back to back exchange, fifth grade students from France are visiting Normandale from April 10-20. During their stay, the French students will be spending a few days in the 5th grade classrooms, visiting other grade levels and taking field trips to experience the Twin Cities. This exchange allows for a unique cultural exchange for the host families and all the Normandale students who have an opportunity to interact with the French Students.
