New Study on Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church Starts Sunday

Top-selling author and Anglican bishop, N.T. Wright tackles the biblical question of what happens after we die and shows how most Christians get it wrong. We do not “go to” heaven; we are resurrected and heaven comes down to earth--a difference that makes all of the difference to how we live on earth.

You are invited to join the Christian Classics Sunday School Class in this study by Zoom on Sunday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. The study starts on Sunday, February 6. Contact Jack and Carol Nuzum at jcnuzum@juno.com or 505-265-5241 for more information.

The meeting will end by noon to allow everyone to depart church for lunch elsewhere. Wearing face masks is required at the meeting. Due to new church security regulations for this weekday mid-day meeting, everyone must park their vehicles and enter St. John's United Methodist Church on the west side (the 2626 Arizona Street NE side) of the church.

Imagine waking up every single day convinced that the twenty-four hours ahead of you are a precious gift to be used wisely. Now imagine that you know exactly how to spend them to be a force for God’s good. How, then, do we walk out unwavering joy-filled faith every day, determined to let go of the things that keep us from experiencing abundant life and fulfilling the plans God has for us? The answers are found in following the footsteps of the One who lived fully, because He was determined that we might do the same.

Women's Bible Study on Entering the Passion of Jesus, Beginner's Guide to Holy Week

Jesus’ final days were full of risk. Every move he made was filled with anticipation, danger, and the potential for great loss or great reward. Jesus risked his reputation when he entered Jerusalem in a victory parade. He risked his life when he dared to teach in the Temple. His followers risked everything when they left behind their homes, or anointed him with costly perfume. In Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner’s Guide to Holy Week, author, professor, and biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine explores the biblical texts surrounding the Passion story. She shows us how the text raises ethical and spiritual questions for the reader, and how we all face risk in our Christian experience.
Fish Fry Dinners

Dear St John’s,

As the 2022 Lenten Season approaches, the Lenten Fish Fry Committee wants you to know that we are sorry to announce that we are not hosting the dinners this year. The Corona virus variants continue to disrupt our community and personal lives. We hope and pray that we can return in 2023.

The dinners were designed to enhance fellowship within our congregation and with the Albuquerque community. Although that cannot happen in the same way as it has for the first eight years, we are asking that you keep the fellowship spirit of the dinners alive this year by making contact with people that you either worked with or socialized with during the dinners.

We are also asking that you consider giving some of what you normally spend on the dinners to the Lenten Offering (in March) at church to support the agencies normally supported by the Fish Fry Dinners. With so many in need within our community these days, we believe this might help relieve some of the pain that our community is experiencing!

Thank you in advance for helping to keep the Lenten Dinners spirit alive!

Loving Well at St. John's

Here at St. John's, there are so many of you who are loving and caring beautifully for one another behind the scenes. We are revisioning and reworking congregational care here at St. John's to use the gifts, graces, and ministries that are already here and and simply form 'connective tissue' to help us to work all together in this important ministry among us. If you have any care needs, please contact Pastor Tiffany or email the care email, care@stjohns-abq.org. There is a new after hours care phone number that you can call with any care emergencies, which is (505) 585-5435.

If you would like to be involved in this 'congregational care team', whether it is praying, writing cards, visiting, or taking communion, please contact Pastor Tiffany at thollums@stjohns-abq.org.

Also, if you are worshipping from home or know someone who is worshipping with us online who would like to receive a gently loved United Methodist hymnal and communion, please email the care email. This is just one of many new ways in which we can help to connect us all together, whether in person or virtually.  And look forward to more ideas of ways that you can join this effort to Love Well at St. John's UMC.
Paper Products for Silver Horizons

Our partnership with Silver Horizons has truly been a blessing to us at St. John's, as Rev. Randall and Rev. Tiffany recently expressed. Throughout February, let's keep this blessed momentum going by collecting the following items for the low-income seniors served by Silver Horizons:  toilet tissue, kleenex, paper towels, aluminum foil, plastic wrap or press 'n seal wrap, and kitchen-size trash bags. Please place your donations in the wire baskets located in the Hospitality Center. We truly thank you for your continued generosity!
Preschool News

Greetings Church Family,

Happy Valentine’s Day! The Preschool’s theme for this month is “Love is for Sharing”. We are working on our social-emotional skills this month. Understanding and sharing our feelings, developing empathy for others, and taking care of ourselves and friends. These concepts and social skills that children learn at this age help children understand how to build friendships, develop self-help skills, and encourage healthy social interactions. We are also learning a bit about China and their New Years Celebration. We had a Drum Parade and bid everyone Kung Hei Fat Choi! (Congratulations and best wishes for a prosperous New Year)!

Blessings and Peace,
Cathy Lubold

February Special Offering: Covenant with Missionaries

February is the month we have the opportunity to continue our support of the two United Methodist Missionaries listed below. You can visit St. John's website to learn more about them both.

First, Desiree Segura-April. She lives in Honduras with her husband (also a UMC missionary) and son Nikolas. She is a Resource Person for Children at Risk Ministries in Latin America and the Caribbean. She partners with churches and other organizations to provide safe places for children to experience holistic and creative Christian education. Click here to listen to an interview with Desiree.

Our second missionary is Dr. Belinda Forbes. She and her husband (also a doctor) and their two daughters live in Managua, Nicaragua. She works with Accion Medica Christiana (AMC), a Nicaraguan Christian Medical group, which specializes in health and development in impoverished rural communities. As a dentist, Dr. Forbes works with a community based primary dental health program where she also mentors volunteers and interfaces with AMC's international partner organizations. Click here to watch a video update from Belinda.

So this month, we have the opportunity to help people who don't have access to medical and dental services, and to help children who need a safe and loving place in the midst of often chaotic lives to learn about God's love. Please give generously.
