Little Einsteins

Science with Snugglies II
Our babies in Snugglies II are growing and learning so much every day. Last month's theme was Science. The babies have been observing a variety of different textures at meal time, art time and play time. Our toys have many different textures! Some of our toys have a cloth-like texture, some are fuzzy, and some are smooth. We explored each of our handheld toys, the play-pen, and our bouncies. The children even enjoyed feeling the pages in some of our tactile books. We had so much fun exploring with our teachers!

Science with the Monkeys
Throughout the month of December, the Monkeys had a lot of fun learning about Science! We talked about the seasons and the weather that we experience during the month of December. We talked about the transition from the fall to winter time. The children loved talking about snow and how it comes during the winter and not in the summer. We read stories and noticed that we will need heavier coats, gloves, scarves and hats for the cold weather. We also sang our “Seasons Song” by the Kiboomers:

“If you know all the seasons clap your hands (x2)
If you know all the seasons, you’ve got four terrific reasons to shout out and name the seasons clap your hands.
If you really love the winter go like this ‘BRRR’ (x2)”

Science is one of the Monkeys favorite subjects to focus on and we look forward to learning more next month!

Science with the Bears
In the month of December, we learned all about the theme, "Where We Live." This theme was explored throughout all of the centers in the classroom. The students were able to engage in many fun, activities. In the Science Center, the children learned about all the different kinds of homes and habitats that animals can live in, and why. First, the children were asked to sort through many pictures of animals. Then, they looked at pictures of different animal homes, and habitats. Next, the children were asked to match the picture of each animal, to the habitat where we think they live. Last, we put our thinking caps on to answer the question, “Why do we think certain animals are better suited to live in certain habitat? Ex. Fish swim- and live in the ocean. Birds fly- and live in the sky, and trees up high. Some live in hot deserts, and some in the freezing Arctic. We followed up looking at pictures of all the different homes and places people can live.

We discovered that people can live all over the world, and in all different kinds of homes and habitats. We looked at pictures of houseboats, desert adobe homes, igloos, underground homes, tree-houses, and castles in the sky. We saw more traditional houses made of stone, wood and bricks. We recognized pictures of our own homes, and where we live.

Mathematicians
Math with the Puppies
Welcome January and a new month of fun and learning. Each month our one-year-old Puppies are introduced to a new number, shape, color and letters. Last month the children were introduced to the number four. We reinforced this concept through different projects and activities. One example was the adorable red houses we made with green rooftops. The Puppies counted one house, one roof, and four windows. The children also enjoyed our Tree Project. Together we decorated the trees as we counted four decorations each. Their faces were filled with fun and excitement as they completed their trees. We also practice our counting with music. While singing “Five Little Ducks” for example, they have fun counting using their fingers and reviewing numbers. We look forward to enjoying more music and art this month as we learn new concepts.

Math with the Bumblebees
During the month of December our Bumblebee class enjoyed many activities to introduce and reinforce math concepts! Whether it’s counting, matching, or learning about shapes the Bumblebees are always having fun with math. Last month, the Bumblebees practiced counting while putting up their fingers to represent the numbers! It was a bit challenging at first, but with practice our class can represent and recognize the numbers 1-5 on their fingers. Most of our class gets excited to say “I’m two!” and represent the number two.  We also went on a block treasure hunt last month! Using a big paper with blocks pre-traced, our class worked together to look for the wooden blocks and figure out where they fit on the paper. By doing this the Bumblebee class practiced spatial-sense and problem solving, and they had fun doing it! Bumblebees love math and will keep growing and learning everyday!

Math with the Pandas
Last month during the theme “Where We Live,” the Pandas learned about shapes. The children really explored this theme in the Math Center. The Pandas observed and learned about different shapes. They also discovered that when you arrange different shapes, and put them together, you can create new shapes. One project that the Pandas enjoyed was creating houses using different shapes such as triangles, rectangles, squares and circles. The Pandas glued these shapes together on a piece of paper to create their own house. Then they used markers to add the finishing details. Some children drew people, windows, staircases, attics and even Christmas lights on their houses.
Another project the Pandas truly enjoyed was creating our very own gingerbread houses for our cooking project! We used graham crackers, vanilla icing, sprinkles, and some yummy candy to build and decorate our own gingerbread houses. Each student was able to use the icing as glue to build their house. They also chose several of the candies (M&Ms and sprinkles) to decorate.
Little Picassos
Art with the Angels
Art is a great way for the Angels to create new things and explore new materials. One of our projects last month was creating candy canes. We took a white candy cane shaped cutout and put it in a shallow tray. Then we added a few drops of red paint into the tray. Next we added two balls to the tray with the paint. Each child took turns holding the side of the tray and rolling the balls around into the red paint and onto the cutout creating stripes on their candy cane. This project was a great way to show that you can paint with anything. The Angels have so much fun painting, even without a paintbrush!

Art with the Sunflowers
December was such a fun month for the Sunflowers. The Sunflowers love to express themselves through art, and one of their favorite things to do is use our new easel to make paintings for their parents and for their teachers. We also spent last month making Christmas projects. We glued together trees with letters on them to make our names, and turned them into Christmas trees. We painted wreaths to give as Christmas presents to the parents. The Art Center is also one of the most used centers throughout the day. The Sunflowers love being able to use different materials in the Art Center to create fun pictures for the people they love. Pom poms and the foam shapes are two favorite things in the Art center that are always being used to create pictures. We can’t wait to see what crafts we can create in the New Year!

Art with the Ducks
During the month of December, we learned about “Our Environment.” For the exploration unit of “Our Environment” we used our sense of sight to explore our environment around us. One activity the students did for art was drawing a picture of our classroom and then their home. The students then compared their home to our classroom. As a class we talked about the similarities and differences between our homes and our classroom, such as the shapes, people, and things we see.

The second art activity we did was using leaves from our environment. When we went out to the playground each student picked up a leaf or two that they liked. We then went inside and placed our leaves under a white sheet of paper. The Ducks colored on the white paper with different colored crayons and saw the outline of the leaves popping up on our paper. The students were amazed when they saw the leaf coming through the paper.
Musicians in the Making
Music with the Bunnies
The Bunnies love singing and dancing, and we incorporate music into our activities each day. We sing during Circle Time, at clean up, and when Mr. Kenny comes each week. When it's time for Music with Mr. Kenny, the children begin in a circle and sing the "Hello Friends" song. We then continue with other songs that they can sing and dance to. Last month the Bunnies enjoyed hearing holiday songs and practicing for our Holiday Show. The children practiced dancing to "Jingle Bell Rock" in a circle, holding hands. They had so much fun practicing that some would walk in and point to the speaker, eager to dance. After all their hard work, they were amazing on stage.

Music with the Lions
In the month of December, the Lions class was excited to get ready for our Holiday show. This meant listening and dancing to all different kinds of Christmas songs, trying to find the right song for us to dance to for the Holiday show. Our Lions class is very energetic and most times we are always on the move. When listening to the Christmas song, “Can’t Sit Still” by Brady Rymer, we noticed how much the kids loved to dance to it. They would ask us to play it again and again. We decided this had to be our song. The Lions were so excited to dance to that song that when Mr. Kenny came to our class, they wanted to show him what we had been working on! Mr. Kenny thought this was a great song for our class! Not only did the Lions love listening to Christmas songs but they also love their time with Mr. Kenny.

Music with the Dolphins
The unit topic for the month of December was “Where We Live.” For music, students were invited to pretend to be a bumblebee. Students were asked to buzz like a bee, walk like a bee, run like a bee and dance like a bee. As they buzzed and moved around the space, we asked children to put their hands on their faces, and pointed out the soft, vibrating feelings they may have felt. We invited children to buzz into the “hive” as they gathered together and explained to children that bees live in a hive. The children practiced buzzing loudly, softly and calmly, and breathing in deeply between buzzes to calm their bodies and relax.

For the second activity, students were asked to share music they enjoy at home. Each child got to play a song that they listen to at home, with the whole class. Students were encouraged to dance or just listen. Students then shared what they liked about the music they heard.

Athletes in Training
Gym with the Kitties
The Kitties love to move, dance and exercise. They are always so excited when it is time to go to the Gym. We dance, play games and take turns riding the different bikes and cars. Roller-coaster races are one of the Kitties’ favorite activities. They love counting “1, 2, 3 GO!” and saying our friends’ names as each one goes. We also have hula hoops that we also use to practice jumping and steps to practice climbing. Each activity helps to develop motor skills and coordination.

Gym with the Chipmunks
During the month of December, the Chipmunks focused on our gross motor skills. The children always look forward to going out to the soccer field and playground, where they climb, slide and play games. Last month, we used every opportunity we had to practice for our Christmas show including some of our gym time! On days it was cold or rainy, we visited the gym and played our 'Dominick the Donkey' song and practiced our dance! The children gained great coordination skills doing this dance! They learned to kick, shake their hands and turn all at the same time! We had a lot of fun practicing and we hope you all enjoyed the show!

Gym with the Turtles
Last month, the Turtles learned about homes and talked about where we live. We learned about the locations and types of homes we live in. It also includes where animals live, where our friends live, and even where Santa Claus, his elves and reindeer live! We reinforced these lessons with some music, including a song that is called, “Where I Live.” This song talks about the many different places to live and uses many descriptive words to describe those places. We took time to learn where various animals live and wondered how we would walk if we lived in an icy area like penguins do. While getting some exercise in the gym, we tried walking like penguins! We wanted to see who got the furthest the fastest! We also know frogs live in water and like to hop on lily pads, so we also practiced our hopping as well. We also made our own game about animals that live on a farm where we tossed bean bags toward the animal we selected. Also, while we were in the gym, we were pretending to drive around our neighborhoods and do a little shopping! We had so much fun this month!

CLASS QUOTES AND STORIES
Angels
Angels
In the gym, Peter was riding in the car. When Ms. Sara was in his way he said, “Beep beep!”

Bears
During Center Time the children were talking about different animals and their homes. Skye was talking to Aiden about different animals. Skye said, “What animals can run the fastest, bears or alligators?” Aiden said, “Bears of course, because we are bigger and stronger.”

Bumblebees
The children were on a Block Treasure Hunt. They were all so excited when finding the correct spot! One classmate, Giovanni, would say “Got it!” after every block he matched.

Chipmunks
Ms. Gina took the children to the front desk to take a picture of them by the tree with their Santa hats. I put the hat on James while walking down the hallway and he said "Ho Ho Ho, I'm Santa!"

Dolphins
While doing the activity “Buzz Like a Bee,” students were asked to pick another animal and explain where they live. Juliet said,I want to dance like a dolphin and flip in the water.”

Ducks
The children loved the leaf drawing. Zofia said, “I wonder if we can do this with something else like seashells!” Great idea for a follow-up lesson.

Kitties
Miss Sara told Noah to wash his hands after snack time. Noah said, “Oh oh…ok!”

Lions
While walking in the hallway the children usually walk on the letters that are on the floor. One day when going outside Quinn stopped on the letter Q and was so excited and yelled, “Q is for Quinn! Q is for Quinn.” The other students then tried to find the letter that their names started with as well.

Monkeys
Every morning Avery comes in and says, “Where Emma?” Then when Emma comes in he gives her a big hug and sits next to her to play.

Pandas
During a small group discussion about the different type of homes, Alessandro shared, “I like the igloo home Ms. Krystal because they help protect the penguins when it’s really cold.”

Sunflowers
When setting up the Christmas tree in the room, Miss Danielle said to Miss Jenna “Our tree looks a little boring, we have to add some things to it.” During Circle Time, Nayeli said, “Miss Danielle, I’ll go shopping with you and get ornaments for the Christmas tree!”

Turtles
While the children were playing and learning in the Dramatic Play and Kitchen Center, some of the girls were playing a game of “house” and decided it was their “daughters” birthday. Emily started telling her friends, “My mommy is three…actually, she is a little bit older, so three and a half!”
