Health-related Quality of Life and Psychological Well-Being among People Living with HIV in Bhutan
Kaveh Khoshnood, Associate Professor of Epidemiology (Microbial Diseases) and CIRA affiliate, hosted Bhutanese colleagues from the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB) at Yale School of Public Health in April. Khoshnood and Dan Bromberg, CIRA predoctoral fellow, are collaborating with Nidup Dorji and Wangchuk on a USAID-funded project, "Health-related quality of life and psychological well-being among people living with HIV in Bhutan". The team is currently analyzing their data and plans to present their findings to CIRA community in the fall.

Special Issue Alert: "Prevention, Care and Treatment of HIV, Substance Use and Addiction"
In this Special Issue of International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH), the problem of HIV prevention and control is seen through the prism of persons who use and abuse drugs. Papers include diverse perspectives from public health, primary, secondary, and tertiary health care with policy, research, community, and implementation science perspectives. Guest Editors for the Special Issue are CIRA affiliates – Sten Vermund, Jeffrey Wickersham, and Lauretta Grau.

Psychology Faculty Member Isha Metzger Honored with Dean's Early Career Award
Isha Metzger, an assistant professor of psychology at the College of Arts & Sciences at Georgia State University (and a former Research Education Institute for Diverse Scholars (REIDS) fellow) whose work focuses on reducing mental health disparities, has been named as one of two recipients of the 2023 Dean's Early Career Award. The award recognizes early-career faculty who are emerging leaders in their field of research, scholarship, or creative activity.

Villanova Nursing Names Dr. Bridgette M. Rice as Associate Dean for Research and Innovation
Bridgette M. Rice, a former REIDS fellow, has been named Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at Villanova University M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing (FCN). Dr. Rice, the Richard and Marianne Kreider Endowed Professor in Nursing for Vulnerable Populations - a role she will continue to hold - assumes her new position effective June 1.

Ndidiamaka Amutah-Onukagha, a former REIDS fellow, dedicates much of her work to training the next generation of Black maternal health scholars. Ending the maternal health crisis, she says, will take an "all hands on deck" approach, uniting academics, changing policies, collaborating with Black birthing people and communities and investing in workforce development.

"Meeting People Where They Are": New Haven's harm reductionists take new approach to drug overdose epidemic
Naloxone training and distribution is one example of a growing approach to drug use known as harm reduction. Rather than pressuring people to quit using drugs entirely, harm reduction advocates accept the reality that people use drugs and try to ensure that they do so as safely as possible, a marked change from traditional abstinence-only responses.
