Ontario’s mixed-use residential project aims for zero-carbon status


Aiming for a Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) Zero Carbon Building Standard design certification, the design concept for a mixed-use residential project in Kingston, Ont., reveals a mix of mechanical, electrical, and structural strategies to achieve the project’s sustainability goals.


The goals range from being conditioned with a geo-exchange heating and cooling heat pump system, decentralized heat recovery ventilation systems, and an envelope with very high thermal performance—all working synergistically to optimize energy consumption whilst improving thermal comfort and air quality inside.

Catch On-Site at Procore’s construction industry forecast


Procore is hosting an in-person breakfast seminar to look at what the experts are calling for in Canada’s construction sector over the coming 12 months. The event, scheduled for 8 a.m. on January 31 at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, will include a panel discussion about the factors driving construction forward in Canada, alongside potential downside risks, including the geopolitical and macroeconomic environment. The panel, which will be moderated by Nolan Frazier, regional director, enterprise Canada for Procore, will include Mary Van Buren, president of the Canadian Construction Association, Alex Carrick, chief economist with Construct Connect, and Adam Freill, editor of On-Site Magazine.

U of T Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre wins 2023 PCI Design Award


The University of Toronto’s Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre was the recipient of a 2023 Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Design Award in the Buildings-Higher Education/University category.


The striking, glass-clad, 750,000-square-foot complex will anchor U of T’s unique cluster of world-leading artificial intelligence scientists and biomedical experts, its world-class entrepreneurship network and the country’s largest concentration of student- and faculty-led startups.

EllisDon supports women with vests that fit


EllisDon’s new Fit Your Frame campaign, launched to provide construction safety vests to women and gender-nonconforming workers, is about much more than simply providing PPE that fits properly.


The initiative, led by the firm’s 2gether inclusive diversity leadership group, involved seeking a supplier that was philosophically aligned, developing a modern vest that at long last offers the right fit for female employees and others, and planning distribution to some 800 EllisDon employees. The program kicked off Jan. 16.

Toronto issues $776.6 million in December building permits


The City of Toronto issued $776.6 million in new building permits in December, 2022, a decline from the almost $2.2 billion issued in November.


Here is an outline of the five largest projects by permit value.


$150 million – 10 Wellesley St. W.


IBI Group designed this 55-storey condominium project for CentreCourt. It took several years from concept to construction, as the developers needed to get Zoning By-law Amendment approvals form the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (LPAT).

AECOM’s material testing laboratory receives qualification from MTO


AECOM recently announced that its high complexity material testing laboratory in Ontario has been qualified by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO). The facility offers high complexity testing of soil, aggregate and rock for both small- and large-scale infrastructure projects and serves the growing demand in Ontario for qualified material testing laboratories to support local construction projects. The laboratory has previously received certification from the Canadian Council of Independent Labs and will continue to support a complete range of testing services for all phases of construction including inspection of shallow and deep foundations, earthwork construction, installation of utilities, and ground improvement projects.

Job vacancies in construction prompt CCA concerns


As residential and commercial builders struggle to find workers concern for the industry in Calgary grows.


“This is a problem that not only affects Calgary and Alberta but Canada as a whole,” Bill Black, president of the Calgary Construction Association (CCA), said in a news release.


Estimates by the CCA put construction vacancies between 3,000 and 4,000 in the Calgary region with national estimates reaching 93,000.

George Brown College, CILTNA partner to create opportunities for supply chain grads


George Brown College’s (GBC) School of Continuing Education and The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation North America (CILTNA) have signed an agreement to help students graduating from the Supply Chain Management Program to advance their careers in the logistics and transportation industry. Through the partnership, in addition to receiving a George Brown certificate, graduates of the online supply chain program qualify to receive the International Diploma in Logistics and Transport offered by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).
