Speaking Ravenese Under the Mesa on Trickster Ridge: An Outdoor Event
|
When: Saturday, April 9
Where: On Trickster Ridge in Palisade
(address provided on registration)
12:30-3 pm: Ritual and the Creative Process,
with Wendy and special guest, multi-media artist extraordinaire, Mary Hertert: a workshop and discussion on the sacred nature of language, the secret purpose of doodling, and the joys and necessities of ritual and living the creative life. Mary will lead us on a short walk where we will collect organic materials and turn them into something surprising. Wendy will lead a series of prompts that will get you writing and thinking of language and rhythm in entirely new ways. In order to activate the intuitional right brain, we'll experiment with neuropathic doodling. You'll come away inspired and more dedicated to the creative impulse. All skill levels welcome. Bring a journal, sketch pad, or notebook.
3:30-4:30 pm: Bringing out the Buddha in Your Dog, with special guest, dog whisperer and K-9 trainer, James Kohout. James will discuss his experience training dogs for veterans with PTSD, children with autism, and how learning to think like a dog can help us all train and communicate more meaningfully with our canine friends.
6-7:15pm: Raising the Vibration with Mary Hertert on gongs and yoga instructor Debra Weller leading us in the asanas. Bring yoga mat and we'll move with the gongs and the setting sun -- or just close your eyes and enjoy.

Many of you will have already heard that beloved local artist Gerry Jensen has suffered a stroke and is in St. Mary's, undergoing intensive PT. Kay Crane, our fearless leader at The Blue Pig Gallery has come up with the brilliant idea of showing dozens, if not hundreds, of Gerry's unframed oils throughout February at a very reasonable price. This is how we can all help Gerry and his wife, Lyla. Come on into the gallery this month and purchase a beautiful piece of Gerry's art. All proceeds will go directly to Gerry, nothing for the gallery. The Blue Pig is located in the heart of downtown Palisade. Here's hoping Gerry has a speedy recovery!

My friends, I have had a recent brush with death, a good deal of time in hospital, and a subsequent new lease on life, which has deepened my sense of gratitude and my love of life, learning, and the arts. My appreciation for my husband, children, and circle of friends has also deepened and been enriched by this experience.
While I am still learning to slow down and am still in the process of healing, I'm looking forward to teaching this spring, and will be doing some travel throughout Colorado and through various Zoom events in order to promote my two upcoming books: The Poetic Imaginarium: A Worthy Difficulty, (essays and haibun), (Lithic Books), and Wise to the West: new poems, (Able Muse Press). Big thanks to respective publishers Danny Rosen and Alex Pepple.

With These Four Words
Fourteen days in hospital:
surgeries and complications
various
humiliations, mysteries
and weepy conversations,
blood-soaked
devastations, pain-filled
bifurcations — wan
and reduced
to providence and nerve,
only to emerge
with these four words:
how can I serve ….

IN PRINT: Some Good News
The good people at the Keats Soul-Making Organization have awarded my poem, Deconstruction, first place in the General Verse Category, and third place was awarded my sonnet, The Inquiry in the Sonnet Category.
"Deconstruction" first appeared in the Hopkins Review, and later appeared in Best American Poetry.
The wonderful anthology Deep Wild, edited by Rick Kempa and Heidi Blankenship, have nominated my poem, Ode to the Slow for a Pushcart this year.
Quite remarkably out of nowhere, the folks from Oprah Quarterly have contacted me and asked if Oprah could include my poem, "Change" in her column for the upcoming issue. "Change" first appeared in Poetry Magazine.
In addition I have new works forthcoming in Hopkins Review, Light Magazine, Alabama Literary Review, THINK Journal, Torrey House Press, and my sonnet, A Thousand Ticking Clocks, was shortlisted for Better than Starbucks' yearly prize.
I'm grateful to all editors and publishers who tirelessly support and promote the art and practice of poetry.
