Book Review:

Great Circle

by Maggie Shipstead

—a 2023 Literary Luncheon

featured author

In this New York Times bestseller, Maggie Shipstead tells an extraordinary tale of resilience and perseverance in two parallel storylines. Marian Graves is a fictional female aviator who became obsessed with flying at a young age and pursued her dream of flying at great costs. She went missing in 1950 during her pole-to-pole route around the globe. In 2014, in a parallel story, Hadley Baxter, a modern actress, prepares for the role of Marian in a Hollywood film. We learn Marian’s back story from Hadley as she researches for her role playing Marian. Both women share a dissatisfaction with the patriarchal system guiding their lives. As the story weaves through one hundred years from the Prohibition era to today, the author’s rich prose, unforgettable characters, and vivid descriptions make this book a joy to read.

Great Circle was the October selection of Evening Books—one of three active book groups in our branch. If you're interested in joining a book group (or starting a new one!), click the button to learn more —>
