Seeking Donations for the Wilson Scholarship Fund
It is time for our annual request for funds to be applied to the Wilson Scholarship Fund endowment, held, invested and administered by the Berks County Community Foundation. Conceived and established over thirty two years ago by former Wilson High School principal Herb Schoenly, former Wilson School District administrator John Skinkus and a few others, the scholarship has awarded over three hundred fifty thousand dollars to graduating seniors. These ten thousand dollar scholarship awards are announced at commencement. In more recent years as the endowment grew, one thousand dollars has been added for the sophomore, junior and senior years provided continued enrollment is verified. When the endowment investment has substantial returns we have been able to award a second smaller award to our runner up candidate. All post-secondary educational programs sought by applicants are accommodated and considered by the application review committee.

The WSF Advisory Committee would like to encourage those donors with the financial means to apply substantial donations via Qualified Charitable Distributions from their IRAs and similar investments. Such contributions may be applied to meet Required Minimal Distributions under the tax code. A goal of a one million dollar endowment is attainable by 2025. We are almost halfway to that goal thanks to a few generous Wilson friends, many consistent annual donors and a positive investment climate. Will you consider our goal?

All donations are gratefully appreciated as many small donor amounts have always been the mainstay of our endowment growth. Please send your check with the notation line identifying: “Donation - Wilson Scholarship Fund.” Please mail to: Wilson Scholarship Fund, Berks County Community Foundation, 237 Court Street, Reading PA 19601.

For additional information about the scholarship or the Wilson Scholarship Committee functions and responsibilities, please contact Gary Coller at 610. 678.5690 or springmontpipes@verizon.net.
