GOMA and RESTORE Science Program co-host session at AGU Fall Meeting

Dave Reed (GOMA) and Caitlin Young (RESTORE Science Program) co-chaired a hybrid session at the AGU Fall Meeting earlier this month focused on "Natural Resource Management Needs for a Changing Gulf of Mexico." GOMA partners contributed to a fast-paced, informative session on topics including regional sediment management, harmful algal bloom impacts, living shorelines, and more.


The AGU Fall Meeting brought together 25,000 scientists from over 100 countries to share their work and discuss solutions to the largest challenges facing our planet.

GoMRI Oil Spill Outreach Program comes to a close

After eight successful years, the GoMRI-funded Oil Spill Science Outreach Program is coming to a close. The program is a partnership between the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) and Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant programs focused on increasing access to oil spill science results. Their products include over 70 outreach publications and 200 presentations. GoMRI was a 10-year, $500 million Deepwater Horizon oil spill research program administered by GOMA.

Learn more about Gulf fiddler crabs as part of our “Get to Know the Gulf” feature in the December 2021 issue of South Mississippi Living. Fun Fact: Fiddler crabs only use their small claw for feeding. Since males only have one small claw, they have to work twice as hard as the females to eat!

NOAA and the Deepwater Horizon Trustee agencies have released their first programatic review of funding and projects from the Natural Resource Damage Assessment restoration program. More information here.


"Sea Level Rise in the Classroom" curriculum available online from PLACE:SLR

The "Sea Level Rise in the Classroom" curriculum, developed for educators by PLACE:SLR, is now available online. PLACE:SLR will also host a series of teacher workshops in the summer of 2022. Read more here.


NAS Gulf Research Program Early Career Research and Science Policy Fellowships accepting applications

Applications for the Early Career Research Fellowship (Human Health and Community Resilience focus) must be submitted by January 12, 2022. The deadline for Science Policy Fellowship applications is March 2, 2022.


Water Institute of the Gulf completes projects supporting use of Southeast Conservation Blueprint

The Water Institute of the Gulf recently wrapped up several projects to increase the utility and application of the Southeast Conservation Blueprint focused on the Chandeleur Islands, Louisiana Master Plan, and inclusion of natural resource value and social vulnerability data. USFWS and Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies establish new task force

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies have established a new landscape conservation task force to develop shared priorities, foster communication, and support regional collaboratives such as the Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy. New mobile app for Gulf Coast fishers and boaters now available

The Alabama Water Institute and Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium have released a new app designed to provide instant access to important information on weather, tides, buoy stations, water safety, and fishing regulations. Read more here.
