From its beginning and throughout its history, psychoanalysis has been defined as a psychology of conflict. Freud's classical theory and then ego psychology considered conflict the center of mental life and its understanding the goal of therapeutic action. As various schools of psychoanalytic thought evolved, the perceived importance of mental conflict has broadened and changed. This presentation will explore the differing roles of inner conflict in major psychoanalytic theories, including Freudian theory, ego psychology, Kleinian theory, object relations theory, self psychology, relational psychoanalysis, and control-mastery theory. The emphasis will be on implications for conceptions of psychopathology and approach to treatment.

OBJECTIVES
After attending the program in its entirety, attendees will be able to:
  1. Identify the place of conflict in different psychoanalytic theories.
  2. Explain the implications of different conceptions of conflict for the understanding of psychopathology.
  3. Describe the implications of different conceptions of conflict for approach to treatment.
