Dear 7th District Community,
I have exciting news to share with you! At our January Board meeting, I was proud to be the Chief Sponsor of Item No. 22-1161 which gives authorization to the Public Defender's Office to represent noncitizens in immigration cases. This authorization was passed unanimously by the County Board. This is a huge win for us! Cook County will officially become the biggest county in the country to offer public defenders in immigration courts and will start representing people in the next few months. I want to thank the Office of the Public Defender, President Preckwinkle, and most importantly, the Defenders for All Coalition for working on this initiative with me for the past three years to make it a reality.

As we continue to set our goals and priorities for 2022, I want to remind our community that although Omicron cases have decreased, we must still practice safety measures such as wearing our masks, getting vaccinated, and getting our booster shot. Please find below information regarding available vaccines sites and transportation along with details on warming centers, food distributions, and property tax exemptions. Also, don't forget to check out our State of the 7th District updates.

Destination: Vaccination is a program that aims to remove the transportation barriers for many Cook County residents by providing rides to and from vaccination sites.
Vaccines are free of cost. Residents who need a ride to receive the COVID-19 vaccine can call (833) 308-1988 and the transportation service should arrive in 30-60 minutes.

Vaccines for Children
Cook County has now made COVID-19 vaccine for children (ages 5 to 11 years) available through the Cook County Health locations. Patients and members of the community can schedule an online appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine for a 5–11-year-old child at vaccine.cookcountyil.gov. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in order to get vaccinated. CCH continues to offer COVID-19 vaccinations for people aged 12+ and booster shots for eligible adults.
The vaccines are free for everyone, regardless of insurance or immigration status.

Property Tax Exemptions Automatic Renewals |
|
The Cook County Assessor's Office has announced an automatic renewal of the below-captioned property tax exemptions. If you received these exemptions last year, you don't need to reapply:
- Homeowner Exemption
- Senior Exemption
- Senior Freeze Exemption
- Persons with Disabilities Exemption
- Veterans with Disabilities Exemption
For first-time applicants, the 2021 tax year exemption filing period will begin in early March 2022.

Cook County Jail Divisions 1 & 1A
Demolition Update
|
|
The demolition of Divisions 1 and 1A at Cook County Jail continues this month as the demolition contractor makes sure the buildings are carefully removed piece by piece, safely and securely.
Here’s what was reported in January:
- The Sheriff officers managing the security post at Sacramento Avenue continue to monitor all traffic going into and out of the Jail campus. The Sheriff officers perform a final inspection prior to the vehicles leaving the facility to ensure public safety.
- Division 1A building demolition continues this month. One high-reach “grappling” piece of equipment, along with one water cannon and other equipment, have been deployed to dismantle the above-ground building and to sort the debris for removal. The water cannon is used to apply a water spray and mist to minimize dust in the air in all areas being demolished and in areas with materials being sorted for appropriate removal. This is the same method used for bringing down the Division 1 building. The demolition of the Division 1A building is 75% complete.
- The demolition project is on schedule.
- The Contractor continues with the removal of underground structures and hauling materials off-site this month.
- Materials from the building are being sorted before moving to off-site storage and recycling facilities. Trucks are scheduled to haul materials from the worksite between 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM. A team supervisor is stationed at the Sacramento Avenue entrance to direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic during all demolition and hauling activities. Street sweepers are deployed multiple times per day to keep the street clean.
- Air quality monitoring continues for the remainder of the project. The air quality readings are reported every 15 minutes and reviewed by a third-party environmental consultant. The data collected to date show air quality is within regulatory requirements set by the federal government.
- The County’s contractor, Pagoda, continues to install site utilities (approximately 15% complete).

La demolición de las Divisiones 1 y 1A de la cárcel del Condado de Cook continua este mes. El contratista está asegurándose que los edificios sean desmantelados retirando cuidadosamente pieza por pieza y tomando todas las precauciones posibles.
Esto es lo que está sucediendo en Enero:
- Los oficiales de la Oficina del Alguacil del Condado, a cargo del puesto de seguridad ubicado sobre la Avenida Sacramento, continúan monitoreando el tráfico que entra y sale del área de la cárcel. - La demolición avanza de acuerdo con el tiempo estipulado.
- Los materiales del edificio están siendo clasificados antes de ser trasladados a las instalaciones de almacenamiento y reciclaje. Se ha programado que los camiones trasladen los materiales del lugar de trabajo entre las 7:00 a.m. las 3:30 p.m. Un supervisor del equipo de trabajo está ubicado en la entrada de la Avenida Sacramento para dirigir a los peatones y el tráfico de vehículos durante la demolición. Las barredoras limpiaran la calle varias veces al día.
- El monitoreo de la calidad del aire continuará hasta que el proyecto finalice. Las lecturas de la calidad del aire se reportan cada 15 minutos y son revisadas por un consultor ambiental externo. Los datos que se han recopilados hasta ahora están dentro de los límites establecidos por el gobierno federal.
- Pagoda, el contratista del proyecto continúa instalando los servicios públicos en el sitio (Completado aproximadamente un 15%).
- El contratista ha finalizado la tarea de retirar materiales seleccionados para ser preservados en el archivo del condado de Cook. Esto incluye elementos arquitectónicos y artefactos de interés.
