Programs @ Lanier
Donna Younkin, Tryon Riding and Hunt Club VP, will help you imagine galloping across a field atop a 1,000-pound horse and then jumping a log and splashing into shallow water on February 15 @ 6 PM. From the safety and comfort of your chair at Lanier, you’ll get to understand and appreciate this cross-country competition as well as show jumping and dressage—together the disciplines of 3-day eventing. This program is a primer for non-riders who love the beauty and athleticism of horses and want to learn more about equestrian sports. It also provides context if you want to spectate or volunteer at any of five local eventing shows in 2023.
Find Your Seat of Calm

Follow along with Nancy Nicholson at Lanier Library, Thursday, March 2, at 3 PM. A 25-year teacher of yoga, Nancy will lead you and eleven others, each in a chair, to practice Kripala Yoga. This “meditation in motion” focuses on sensations in your body and breath while seated and also, if you feel able, while standing by your chair.

Women and men of all ages practice yoga for flexibility, improved balance, calmness, focus, and other physical and mental benefits. Nancy’s goal is to help you “feel the union of mind, body, and spirit” through poses and gentle exercises you can repeat easily at home. Dress comfortably.

Seating is limited so reserve now in-person, or call 828-859-9535, or register online here.

This free workshop is made possible by the generous support of the Kirby Endowment Fund at PCCF.

SAVE THE DATE: The calming waterscape in the photo was created by designer Steve Robbat, owner/operator of Waterspirit LLC. Save Thursday 8/24, 1 PM, for Steve’s program “Art That Flows.”

February Board & Staff Profile
Since September 2022, you may have gotten to know REGINA MAIMONE from her warm welcomes as
Saturday Librarian. You may not have known that she studied at the University of Oxford, traveled
extensively internationally and domestically, and is fascinated by cultural psychology and world
religions.

She elaborates, “I have a BA in psychology and am currently reading “The Soul of Desire: Discovering
the Neuroscience of Longing, Beauty, and Community.” I also enjoy scholarly commentaries on the
Hebrew and Greek texts of the Bible.”

Among her hobbies, she lists long meditative nature walks. She has also been singing for 15 years and
has taken more harp lessons than she can count. On January 8, 2023, she sang and played at a local
church. “I love the deep rich tones of the strings.

“The first time I entered Lanier, I was enchanted with the abundance of cozy reading areas. My favorite areas are the Reading Room with its art collection and the Le Duc Room with its nature collection.”

During the week, Regina works at a coffee shop and also firmly on the ground of The Gorge Zip Line office in Saluda. She took the position at Lanier “to be surrounded by books and a friendly community that enjoys discussing literature and ideas as much as I do.”

A Note from the Board President
Yak Trax
I slipped on an icy patch one winter many years ago and went down like a ton of bricks. Fortunately, nothing was hurt but my pride. When I told my mother and sister about falling, they mailed me a pair of Yak Traks. Through the years, I have gone through many pairs of these incredibly useful items. Essentially, they are composed of a metal mesh sole in a rubber frame that pulls on over your shoes or boots. They give you super traction and are great to use if you have to go out when snow and ice are on the ground. So- stay safe on your feet out there! Just don’t wear them around in your house - your floors won’t thank you! Until next time, Vicky

January Book Review
Prisoners of the Castle

For readers who like well-researched books, the recent publication by Ben MacIntyre adds another book from World War II about the story of the infamous Colditz Castle, and follows the period from the early 1940’s through the end of the war. This follows on to some of his other books such as, Operation Mincemeat, Double Cross, and The Spy and the Traitor, Colditz Castle is where the Germans imprisoned captured French, British, Dutch, Norwegian, and a few Americans officers, plus noteworthy people who they thought might be useful in future prisoner swaps. What makes this book so intriguing are stories of the prisoners' continuing ingenuity in pursuit of devising methods to escape this infamous Nazis’ Fortress Prison. MacIntyre details how the prisoners found a way to learn about what was happening during the war, and how they were able to build and acquire tools to aid in escaping, such as maps, compasses, costumes, money, and even a glider.  MacIntyre in his detailed research also tells what happened to many of the prisoners who survived and lived to tell their stories, and a secret code that was devised to communicate with the outside world and British Intelligence.

Underdogs Get Their Day @ Lanier

A crowd of interested people loved learning more about the red wolves and other
misunderstood underdogs at the January 19 presentation by Loti Woods and Dale
Weiler of Weiler Woods for Wildlife. Loti and Dale taught us so much about red
wolves, hellbenders, and bats and the challenges they face due to habitat loss and
human activity. They also shared the educational programs they are developing to
engage young people in the welfare of these animals. Anyone interested in
learning more can sign up for their newsletter at the library.
A Wonderful Holiday Party
How wonderful it was to see Lanier Library filled with members enjoying each other’s company—and good food too! On January 7, over 100 members enjoyed the Holiday Party that included a variety of homemade desserts made by members as well as delicious food from Krossroads Kitchen and the keyboard music of Art DeCotiis. Special thanks to bartenders Jane Darby and Jack Carlock as well as to Eilene Morgan for serving her delicious punch. Lanier Library board members Cindy Caldwell, Vicky Jackson, and Christine Vincent handled set up and clean up, assisted by loyal volunteer Art Marquis.

February Display

The February display case will focus on Dr. Douglas Tallamy, New York Times bestselling author and speaker at the Gardening for Life Celebration at Polk County High School on March 4, 2023.  A review of Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home in the Minneapolis Star Tribune says, “Reading this book will give you a new appreciation of the natural world—and how much wild creatures need gardens that mimic the disappearing wild.”

Thank You!

Thank you to Loti Woods and Dale Weiler of Weiler Woods for Wildlife for sharing Dale's sculptures in the January display case.

Beauty That is Never Old
James Weldon Johnson - 1871-1938

When buffeted and beaten by life’s storms,
When by the bitter cares of life oppressed,
I want no surer haven than your arms,
I want no sweeter heaven than your breast.
When over my life’s way there falls the blight
Of sunless days, and nights of starless skies;
Enough for me, the calm and steadfast light
That softly shines within your loving eyes.
The world, for me, and all the world can hold
Is circled by your arms; for me there lies,
Within the lights and shadows of your eyes,
The only beauty that is never old.
