Heart Connections - January 2023

For the pets and people of our community, January was another great month! A total of 54 pets were adopted. One of our greatest successes from the month is the adoption of Marsha, who waited 249 days to find her match. GMHS is incredibly thankful to our friends and supporters who ensure we have the resources to give pets like Marsha the time necessary to make a lasting heart connection. May Marsha and her new family enjoy many happy years together!

The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners. We are also committed to education, outreach, and transparency. Our annual statistics are available on our website, and we also offer you a monthly snapshot.

Do you want to help animals in our community? Sign up to volunteer at GMHS!

We have a great team of hardworking, dedicated volunteers, but we can always use more! Do you have a few hours each week or month to spare? We are looking for Canine Wellness Assistants, Feline Wellness Assistants, and Transport Associates.

We are so excited to announce our new Seniors for Seniors adoption program!

This program is designed to help senior citizens (65+ years) rediscover the joys of having a cat of dog in their lives. Senior citizens may enjoy a lowered adoption fee for senior dogs ($50 for 7+ years) and senior cats ($30 for 10+ years). Chanel is just one of our senior pets looking to meet their match! Contact our adoption team at 804-693-5520 for a personalized recommendation.

Xylitol is a common ingredient that is poisonous to pets. The first step to protecting your pet is to recognize the different places where xylitol can be hiding.

Shelter Pet Spotlight - Meet Jerome!

Jerome is a fun-loving and playful pup who has endless amounts of love to offer his adopters. He loves walks! He is an easy walker, but he does like to sniff every tree he sees. When you’re ready for a break, he will sit on a bench with you. He loves belly rubs, peanut butter-filled Kongs, old toys, new toys, any type of toys, and most of all he would love to meet YOU!

Jerome takes time to build trust with people. When he does, his huge heart opens wide. He needs someone who will continue to work with him and give him lots of opportunities to exercise and play. Older kids are recommended because he really loves toys – and treats, Jerome says, remember to bring lots of treats. This boy is a true gem and if you’re lucky enough to be on the receiving end of his joy and love, there is no better feeling!
