NEWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP -- LEARN MORE THIS SUNDAY ABOUT HOW YOU CAN TUTOR AT NEWELL.

Over the last few months, we’ve been seeking ways to partner with Newell Elementary School. Newell is the nearest elementary school to Advent and has a minority enrollment of 96%.  This is much higher than the state average and sadly they rank much lower than the state average in reading/language arts.

Many students are struggling academically, especially after many months of virtual learning.  Having tutors for some of their students is a primary objective of the school’s leadership. The Augustine Literacy Project is a well-established literacy project that fully trains interested individuals in how best to tutor a child.   Their objective is to improve reading, writing, and spelling skills of readers in under-resourced communities by providing free, long-term, one-on-one instruction from highly trained tutors. Tutors are assigned a student in 1st grade and work with that student until they move to the 3rd grade. Tutoring will be in reading and will take place at the school.

Where does Advent fit in? We are very hopeful of having a few members who will be interested in helping these students.  On Sunday, November 14, a representative from the Augustine Literacy Project will attend worship at Advent and will remain after worship to offer a presentation outlining how their tutoring program works and talk with anyone interested in becoming a tutor for Newell. The presentation will also be available by Zoom and recorded for folks who cannot be present.  Anyone interested is encouraged to remain after worship on November 14th to learn more about this program.

For more information before the presentation, see their website at alpcharlotte.org. Carol Schierlmann (spiritualdev@adventlu.org) is coordinating for Advent.

Our Adventurers' group will gather for Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 18, 12 noon, at the church. If the weather permits, we'll put tables and chairs on the grass at the cross to eat but if it's too cool or wet, we'll gather in the gym. Masks and social distancing will be maintained as much as possible. Turkey, dressing, gravy, veggie tray will be provided. Others may bring side dishes or desserts. Bring change and green bills or checks for our Christmas Jars. Proceeds will be matched by Wubben and given to the elderly program in Alta Cayma, Peru.

All who find themselves available on this day/time are invited to join us. Hope to see you there!

CARD MINISTRY NEEDING 2 OR 3 MORE VOLUNTEERS

Advent’s Card Ministry needs a few more Card Ministers to fill in gaps in the calendar. Could you be one of them? This ministry requires a minor time commitment and is quite fulfilling. Don’t let the long list of names on the Prayer List scare you away. Our policy is to send cards only to members. Names of card recipients are assigned by the coordinator each week. Each Card Minister serves a 2-week stint per year and typically sends 8-15 cards during that time although many Card Ministers have volunteered to be called upon twice a year – how much you serve is up to you. You will be expected to purchase your own cards (dollar store!) and postage, but these can be reported as “Gift by Receipt” if you so choose.

Please contact Debra Efird at debra_efird@yahoo.com or text or call 980-621-1283 if you're interested in serving.

GIFTS FOR GOD FROM THE PEOPLE OF GOD!!!

To make your gift, you may:

  2. Mail a check to the church at 8840 University City Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28213. All offerings received will go to General Fund unless otherwise designated on the memo line.
  3. Use bill pay through your personal bank or credit union.
  4. Use Online Giving.  See the info below for details on using this tool.
  5. Bring your offering by the church and leave it on the counter near the door to Pastor Ward's office.
  6. Drop an envelope containing your offering into the slot of the US Postal box at the corner of our parking lot near the office entrance.
Using Online Giving:

  1. This tool allows you to use a credit card, debit card, or bank checking or savings account payment.

  3. You can also designate where you want your gift to go.... General Fund for operating expenses or other special fund. A number of special funds are built into the tool already but if your choice is not listed, you can choose OTHER and type the name of the fund you want to get credit. You can do multiple donations in one entry.
  4. To use this tool you can go to the Advent website (adventlu.org) and click on GIVE in the upper right-hand corner of the main screen, OR you can click on the icon here in this note:  Click here to access Online Giving now
(Remember to give to sandwiches, World Hunger, Our Neighbors' Plate (ONP) by adding to your regular offering and mark appropriately on the memo line of your check or add to the "other" category in on-line giving.)
