Because Lutherans find the cross central to faith: we need to examine our place beneath the cross to find out what it is and how it changes us. You may or may not be familiar with the old hymn, 'Beneath the Cross of Jesus" (you can listen to it here). During the season of Lent please join us for Wednesday worship, song, prayer, study, conversation, and community as we explore what it means to be Beneath the Cross of Jesus. Learn more below about Emanuel's new cross on the lawn crafted by our own Bill Salt. We are better together.

A Word from Bill
Pastor Marcus asked me if I could build a replacement cross last Lent/Easter because the old one was in such bad shape. This winter I purchased some 6x6 rough cedar to make the replacement and the work began. The vertical piece. Is 10 feet long and the cross piece is 4 feet long.
To join the two pieces a half-lap joint was used. To make the joint, I used a circular to make initial cuts, a hand saw to complete those cuts, and a chisel and mallet to complete them. After the cross was assembled, a heavy coat of water sealer was applied to finish it. All in all it took about 3 days to complete the work with much of that being drying time for the sealer.
I have been working with wood in one form or fashion pretty much most of my life. I get my love of wood from my father and maternal grandfather, both of whom were excellent wood workers. I have had the good fortune to have a few other incredible mentors along the way. I love the look, feel, and smell of wood. It is such a fine example of God’s handiwork. The grain, color, and texture. I love it!
I don’t remember when I was first introduced to Shaker style furniture, but it was a long time ago. I love the clean lines, quality craftsmanship, and the basic philosophy that the beauty of a thing lies in the wood itself, and how well it serves its purpose, a philosophy I try to carry over into all the pieces I create. Hence, I named my shop Salt Shaker Woodworks.

Dust and Return
There are things Christians do in church on an annual basis that must seem downright odd to outsiders. Ash Wednesday may win the grand prize for distinctive strangeness. A pastor comes at you with a glob of ash and pronounces these words: “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” How did this come to be?
