Help us bury the alleluias during Sunday's Family Outdoor Service beginning at 9 a.m.
“Alleluia,” praise the Lord, is used as a regular part of our worship except during the season of Lent. We omit the “alleluias” from our liturgies, prayers and songs during this solemn season. This tradition dates back centuries, possibly as early as the fifth century in the western Church.

We look forward with great anticipation as we live through the 40 days of Lent for the return of this word of praise. It is in the midst of The Great Vigil of Easter that the Alleluia is resurrected. After we have heard the story of “God’s saving deeds in history” and participated in baptism, the celebrant exclaims “Alleluia. Christ is risen.” And the people reply with great enthusiasm, “The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.” Easter has arrived and we celebrate.

The theme of the Family Service on February 27 will focus on how we observe Lent in our church. The activities that follow the service will include burying the “Alleluias” that the children will decorate. When we return to the Cathedral on Easter morning we will discover that the Alleluias are no longer resting. They live again in our liturgy, our prayers and our songs as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Be sure to join us at 9 a.m. in Cathedral Park for this special service and activity following in Taliaferro Hall.

All the Lent Madness action begins March 3
What is Lent Madness, and how can I play? Well, good news! It is time for the 2022 Lent Madness season kickoff.

The format of the contest is modeled after the NCAA basketball tournament popularly known as March Madness. Saints, instead of teams, compete for the coveted Golden Halo trophy. The single-elimination tournament begins with 32 saints. “Games,” pairing of the saints, take place during the week – weekends except for one Saturday are free. Basic biographical information is presented for each contestant. After learning about the saints of the day, the people vote for their favorite. There is tight security around the voting…you may only vote once. Winners advance to the Saintly Sixteen, then the Elate Eight, and the Faithful Four, from which two survive to the championship contest. The winner is crowned with the Golden Halo.

Play begins March 3 with the matchup between Stephen and Wenceslaus. Here is the link with more information and how to sign up to vote: Lent Madness. What a fun way to practice a Lenten Devotion.

Care for Creation with Plastic Fast
The season of Lent is quickly approaching. It’s time to re-up our commitment to caring for Creation through the discipline of a Plastic Fast. What is this? The practice of a Plastic Fast is using the Lenten season to very intentionally think about our daily use of one-time plastics. And then, to take action to change our daily behavior!

This daily discipline is not easily done at a time when one-time-use plastics are proliferating everywhere we look! Some plastics are easy to avoid, like balloons, which are disastrous for the environment and for marine wildlife. We can simply refuse to ever purchase balloons. Other items, like plastic food packaging at the grocery store, are difficult or impossible to avoid. It takes intention, commitment, and creativity to minimize our use of plastics. So, this year we are asking for YOUR creative thoughts and ideas so we can share them to help each other be good stewards of Creation.

Lay Weeder Work Day - March 26
The St. Johns Cathedral “Lay Weeders,” the group that keeps the Cathedral grounds well-groomed and blooming, is having its spring workday Saturday, March 26, from 8 - 11 a.m. One task this year is to prepare our shrubbery to enable the pest control company (that will be fumigating the Cathedral for termites) to be able to get to the windows and doors that will need to be taped shut.

Shrubs below windows must be trimmed back so workers can access those work areas. Anyone interested in helping with this task and/or other landscaping tasks should email Julia Stark at juliastark@bellsouth.net or phone 904-563-0349. A lunch will be provided.
