Letter from Principal Young

Dear OLOL Families,

Today is Administrative Professional Day. I would like to thank Lori Hendricks for the amazing job that she does in the office every single day. If I had to write up a job description for what she does in one given year, it would be at least 4 pages long.  We have a staff Christmas party each year and sometimes I hand out different awards.  Mrs. Hendricks won the award for “best attitude”  award.  Lori has been here two years and I don’t think that I have ever seen her upset.  She juggles all that she has to do with a tremendous amount of grace and patience.  Every staff member, student, and family should be so thankful that Mrs. Hendricks said yes to OLOL.  Thank you Lori!

Thank you to all that attended OLOL Trivia Night.  As usual, it was a fun evening that raised approximately $4,000 for our school.  The best news is that we reached our GRACE fundraising goal so all proceeds raised stay right here at OLOL.  I would like to upgrade some of our classroom furniture and this $4,000 will definitely help.  An extra thank you goes to Corey Coonen who chaired this event.  Thank you Corey for your dedication to this event and all that you did to help raise funds for our school and make sure everyone had a good time.

Earlier this week I was able to attend a DePere Rotary Club event in which they recognized John and Lynn Fink with the “Roses for the Living” award.  This award is given each year to a community member that goes above and beyond in service to their community.   Some of the discussions that our staff has centers on the question what does quality education sound like, feel like, and look like.  When I think about what Catholic and Christian service looks and feels like, I look at John and Lynn Fink.  Between the two of them, they put in endless hours here at OLOL just because they know it makes a difference in the lives of others.  They don’t do it for recognition.  They don’t do it for their own ego.  They do it just because it is the right thing to do and it helps out people in their community.   Their willingness to serve and put others' needs in front of their own should be modeled by all of us.  If you see Lynn or John in the next couple of weeks, be sure to say thank you.  Our school is better because of their service.

“Service is what prayer looks like when it gets of its knees and walks around the world” - Michael J Graham

Spring Concert News from Mrs. Lewis

It feels early, but there are a few important notes about the spring concert that I want to make sure to communicate with you sooner rather than later!

The Our Lady of Lourdes Spring Concert, A Year in Church Music, will be Thursday, May 11. The concert will be held in the Church and will begin at 6:30 P.M. All Kindergarten through 8th grade students are participating in the concert. The concert is a mandatory performance for all students - every voice and instrument matters - their classmates are counting on them!

Students should dress nicely for the concert. Boys should wear nice pants (no blue jeans, no sweat pants, no shorts) and a nice shirt (button down or polo shirt). Sweaters, suit coats, ties, etc. are all fine, but not necessary. Girls can wear nice pants and a nice shirt, a skirt and a nice shirt, or a dress. Skirts or dresses should reach the knee or should have leggings worn underneath. Leggings should only be worn under a skirt or tunic-length top.

Our concert will be featuring liturgical (Mass) music that we sing throughout the year. In class, students are learning about the church calendar and the various seasons we celebrate. Each season has a specific color (or colors) associated with it. Each class is being asked to wear the liturgical color of their music’s season. From the waist up, students should be wearing a top that is at least 50% the appropriate color. The seasons and color(s) for each class are listed below:

  • Advent - 2nd Grade - purple and/or pink
  • Christmas - 3rd Grade - white
  • Ordinary Time - Kindergarten - green
  • Lent - 4th Grade - purple
  • Holy Week - 5th Grade - purple, red, and/or white **5th graders who are in the middle school choir should wear white so there is no need to change**
  • Easter - Middle School Choir - white
  • Ordinary Time - 1st Grade - green

**Band students who are in the church choir should wear white. Band students who are ONLY participating as band students, can wear whatever color they would like.**

A shirt or dress that is primarily the liturgical color, but also contains other colors is 100% fine. T-shirts may also be worn if needed. Large logos should be avoided if possible.

All band students should arrive at school and meet in the band room by 6:00 P.M. All other students should arrive in church by 6:15 P.M. All students should plan on staying for the entire concert as we will be performing as a whole school at the close of the concert.

If you have any questions, please e-mail Mrs. Lewis at mlewis@gracesystem.org.

Spanish 'Showoff Night' News from Mrs. Eggart

Hola padres,

I am very excited to share with you that Spanish Show Off Night (SSON) will be returning on May 18th at 6:30 p.m.  The last time we were able to have this event was in 2018. For those of you who have never participated in our event, SSON is a night full of laughter and fun.

In the Spanish classes, students have been learning to speak Spanish and also about the culture of different Spanish speaking countries. At the SSON, kids go beyond their comfort level to show off their language and cultural knowledge. Kids write their own skits, recite poems, sing, dance, and act for fun. Students will take you around Latin America in one night.

Attendance at the SSON is mandatory. It is part of your child's final Spanish grade. If your child does not attend, they get a zero unless they are excused by their parents. I appreciate an email letting me know in advance if your child will not be attending.

I will also need some parent volunteers per grade level to make food for that night. In previous years, after the show, we all gathered in the cafeteria and enjoyed great Latin American dishes. An email with further clarification per grade will follow.

Thank you for supporting the Spanish program.

If you have any questions, please e-mail Mrs. Eggart at leggart@gracesystem.org
