SCCF is pleased to announce the upcoming construction of Ruth Brooks Propagation Facility at the Bailey Homestead Preserve, which was generously funded with the help of the Brooks family. The facility will allow the nurturing of the next generation of native plants, particularly species that are not commercially grown, are rare, or at risk of extinction. 2022 Florida Legislative Session
The 2022 Florida Legislative Session began Jan. 10 and is scheduled to end on March 11. SCCF will closely track and engage in legislation that impacts our community and our environment. Each Monday, we will post the week’s committee hearings on the SCCF legislative tracker. As legislation progresses, expect Action Alerts to engage in the process. Slow Down and Look Around: Vessel Strikes Among Top Causes of Sea Turtle Mortalities
In 2021, SCCF documented a total of 43 stranded turtles (40 dead and 3 live). The majority of the strandings (29) were loggerheads (Caretta caretta), followed by 8 Kemp's ridleys (Lepidochelys kempii) and 6 greens (Chelonia mydas). Definitive vessel-strike injuries were found in 11 strandings. Boaters, please abide idle-speed zones and keep eyes peeled for turtles near the water's surface. SCCF Staff Assist Southwest Florida Turtle Project in Collier County
SCCF staff working on the Terrestrial and Freshwater Turtle Project visited Collier County in December to assist the Southwest Florida Turtle Project, headed by Florida SouthWestern State College Biology Professor Jordan Donini on the Naples campus with a large survey. This gathering included turtle biologists, volunteers, graduate students, and professors from Florida and out of state. READ MORE

Evenings at the Homestead: A Season of Change – A Two-Part Conversation
Join us for a two-part series that takes the pulse of the islands’ natural systems and local efforts to keep them healthy. SCCF Marine Laboratory Director Eric Milbrandt, Ph.D., and SCCF Research Associate Leah Reidenbach will be the January speakers. SCCF Coastal Resilience Manager Carrie Schuman, Ph.D., and hydrologic modeler Paul Julian, Ph.D., will present in February. The Evenings take place 7pm-8:30pm on Tuesday, Jan. 18 and Tuesday, Feb. 15 at Bailey Homestead Preserve (1300 Periwinkle Way). Tickets are $10 and there is a virtual option. Welcome Walkabout: Island Ecology for New Residents
Are you a new property owner on Sanibel or Captiva? Or would you simply like to learn about what makes our islands special? Join SCCF on a walking tour to learn about unique plants and animals, the island’s steeped conservation history, and current challenges in keeping the islands as a sanctuary. Weeds ‘n’ Seeds Botanical Journeys

Catch Up on Presentations about SCCF-UF Collaboration
In 2021, SCCF brought in visiting researchers, post-doctorate and graduate students, and technicians in partnership with the University of Florida Center for Coastal Solutions (UF-CCS). The cohort analyzed the causes, drivers, and transport of algal blooms in Lake Okeechobee, and the watershed and estuary. A graduate course called Coastal Policy Lab—combining science, engineering, and policy—examined issues such as mangrove trimming, dredging, and the Sanibel Plan.
