A HEAP OF STONES

Genesis 31 tells of a heap of stones which established a covenant between Jacob and Laban upon Jacob’s departure with Rachel, Leah, a large flock, and servants. It was not an amicable departure. The heap of stones represented a landmark of a new covenant. It would serve as a boundary which neither could cross over. It established territory.

When Abram sojourned his first ten years in Canaan, he would make an altar to the LORD using stones. It was his way of making his own covenant to Jehovah as his God. It was marking his territory.

When Joshua led Israel across Jordan to take the territory of Canaan, he established a heap of stones to testify of God’s covenant of giving this land to Israel. The twelve stones represented the twelve tribes. It was a covenant forever.

God has also established a covenant of stones for the church through Jesus Christ, who is the chief cornerstone. These are the twelve stones built upon the twelve apostles of the Lamb. We see it in the New Jerusalem. In Revelation 21:14 each of the twelve foundations (stones) were named for each of the twelve apostles. It is a covenant of eternal life established by God for us.

Some covenants are eternal, and others are conditional. An eternal covenant is ended only upon the death of one of the covenantors. God’s New Covenant sealed by Jesus’ blood and built upon the apostles’ is an everlasting covenant.

As a born-again believer, you are in a covenant relationship with God in Christ Jesus. It is an everlasting (age enduring) covenant. God will keep you and preserve you for all time and eternity. Your heap of stones is established in heaven, in the New Jerusalem.

AS UNTO THE LORD

In Colossians 3:23-24 it says, “23And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24 knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”

This scripture lets us know that whatever we choose to do, we do it as if we were doing it to or for Jesus Christ. It is not always easy to do things for those that have hurt you, but if you do those things as if you were doing them unto Jesus, you will have an attitude that will not be missed by God. He will see what you are doing, and will reward you for doing it when you didn’t want to.

There will always be those that rub you the wrong way. Those you work with, those you are related to, those that go to the same church. Whoever they are, treat them the way you would treat Jesus. This is God’s love working through you. Even if those you treat this way do not respond in love, remember you are doing it for Jesus.

When you use this mindset through your life, you will always have peace. Those that treat you wrong will never be able to rob that peace from you because in spite of their behavior, yours is right. Jesus told us to “love our enemies” (Matthew 5:44). 

There is no room for bad behavior on our part when we do it this way. There is no room for “karma” or “what goes around comes around” behavior in our lives when we are totally submitted to the Lord and do everything as unto Him.
