Safeguarding Machinery is Essential for Worker Protections
Employee exposure to unguarded or inadequately guarded machines is a common workplace hazard that can result in amputations, lacerations, crushing injuries, abrasions and sometimes death. Amputation is one of the most severe and crippling workplace injuries, most often leading to permanent disability.
Employers are responsible for safeguarding machines. Any part, function or process with the potential for causing injury must be safeguarded using control methods that prevent employee contact with hazardous areas. Used or older equipment may require either purchasing additional safeguards or building and installing them in-house.
Guards and devices need to be compatible with a machine’s operation and designed to ensure safe operator use. Safeguards should be designed with the machine operator in mind as a guarding method that interferes with the operation of the machine may cause employees to override it. All machine safeguards need to be properly designed, constructed, installed, used and maintained in good operating condition to ensure maximum employee protection. Visit OSHA’s Machine Guarding webpage for more information and resources.

Self-Inspections Help Identify and Control Workplace Hazards
An effective way to identify workplace hazards is for knowledgeable and experienced workers to conduct routine safety and health self-inspections. The only way to know if potential hazards exist and if they are under control is to assess work processes directly.
Employers should conduct routine workplace self-inspections to:
- Identify hazards,
- Control identified hazards, and
- Monitor and evaluate hazard controls to verify that they continue to be effective.

OSHA Reminds Employers to Submit Injury and Illness Data
OSHA is reminding employers that they must submit Form 300A data for 2022 electronically by March 2, 2023. Establishments under Federal OSHA jurisdiction can use the ITA Coverage Application to determine if they are required to electronically report their injury and illness information to OSHA. Establishments under State Plan jurisdiction should contact their State Plan. Employers must connect their Injury Tracking Account to a Login.gov
account to submit their 2022 workplace injury and illness data. Watch the video to learn how.
