Snow Removal

Goals of the snow response plan include improving the safety and mobility of our transportation system by plowing town streets as efficiently as possible, keeping priority streets passable, and minimizing traffic disruption. Bennett’s main streets are highest priority, as they carry most of the Town’s traffic, as well as emergency vehicle and resident transportation.

Plowing and Treatment of Bennett’s Main Streets

Town of Bennett Public Works provides snow response services to most streets, utilizing a fleet of two large plows and seven residential plows. Large plows are used around main roads, emergency facilities, senior assisted living facilities, water treatment facilities, schools and emergency response facilities. The residential plows are used on residential streets.

Town of Bennett uses solid deicers on its main streets as part of its snow response. The solid deicer, called Ice Slicer, is a naturally-mined product from Utah that is more than 90-percent chloride salts. Its red color comes from 60+ trace minerals also naturally found in the deicer. The product helps prevent snow and ice from bonding to the pavement and can serve to provide some traction on the roadways during snow events.

What to Expect:

  • Plowing of emergency access, businesses, bus routes, and residential collector streets will begin at 3 inches.
  • Plowing of residential streets will occur at approximately 6 inches.
  • When deployed, the residential plows will take one pass down the center of every side street to prevent deep ice rutting and to keep the streets passable on accumulation of over 6 inches of snow.
  • All residents and subdivisions are responsible for maintaining their own sidewalks.

Community Services Winter Reminders

The Bennett Community Services team would like to ensure that your holidays are filled with joy, so here are some winter tips to help keep you and yours safe this holiday season.

Snow and Ice Removal:

  • Many falls occur when sidewalks, driveways and walkways are covered in snow and ice. Residents are required to ensure their portion of the sidewalk is cleared of snow, ice and debris. We recommend that if you are plowing snow, direct it to your yard to utilize the moisture when it melts.

Water and Sprinkler Lines:

  • Properly winterizing your sprinkler system ensures it will not get damaged during freezing temperatures.
  • Mobile home plumbing is extremely vulnerable to winter temperatures and without proper insulation the pipes could freeze, crack and potentially burst. This could cause extensive damage and expensive repairs.
  • You can install foam board insulation and foam wrap around pipes to help keep them safe.
  • If you have heat tape installed, always check for frays or faulty lines.

Pets:

  • After your pet comes in from the outside, wipe them down to dry them off. You’ll appreciate having less of a mess and they’ll appreciate being warm.
  • While drying your pet, check the pads of each paw ensuring there is no cracking or bleeding due to element exposure. Also, wipe the pads off well because they may have picked up ice melt, salt or other potentially dangerous material on their travels.
  • The warmth of your recently run car may attract outdoor cats who like to sleep under the hood. If unchecked, an engine may injure or kill the unsuspecting cat. Try tapping the hood or front quarter panel of your vehicle prior to starting.
  • If you have animals that are kept outside, ensure they have adequate cover, food, water and warmth to help protect them during the cold season.

We hope these suggestions are helpful and would like to wish you and your family a happy holiday season.
