MONDAY MEMO
4th graders Emmett Bristol and Spencer Amidon teamed up for a challenge to follow a map made by a classmate on birch bark toward a secret destination, with no words or numbers, just like the Wabanaki did.
Greetings!

As the calendar year comes to a close, we also finish the first third of the year at school and look forward to celebrating the season with a music concert and art show, a tree decorating competition fundraiser for H.O.P.E., and our traditional Mythology Day.

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
ADMISSIONS SEASON
We are currently booking visits for prospective students for the 23/24 school year. As has been the case recently, we have a high number of potential applicants relative to the number of anticipated openings for next year. If you know a family who is interested in coming to Riverside next year, please let them know they should reach out to Krystal as soon as possible. Every year, we get calls after we have made our acceptances, and we'd like everyone who is interested to be able to be considered.
CALENDAR CHANGE
Roy has made the decision to extend our holiday vacation by one day: there will be no school on Monday, January 2. This change will support those traveling after the New Year to be prepared to return to school well-rested. He also feels it's a gift to the staff, who have worked so hard to keep our doors consistently open through the challenges of the pandemic.
CHRISTMAS TREES FROM THE COBBS
The Cobb family (8th grader Esme) would like to share the Christmas trees growing on their property with any Riverside families who want them. Bring your saw, rope, and muscle to their home at 425 Jones Road, Lyndonville (only left-hand driveway after the mailboxes) on any Saturday or Sunday, between 10am-2pm. Please text or call 802-498-5982 in advance so they can put their dogs inside. Please make a donation of your choice (suggested $40) to Riverside by bringing payment to Krystal in the office or giving it to the Cobbs if you see them at their home.
TRIMESTER REPORTS
This year the faculty wanted to try reporting on student learning in trimesters, instead of quarters or semesters. Thank you for embracing our experiment! Elementary students will have report cards and comments coming home in their boomerang folders mid week; middle school reports will be mailed home mid week. Please take the time to review them carefully, help your child(ren) make sense of their successes and challenges, and reach out to teachers directly if you have any follow up questions.
LABEL GEAR PLEASE
It's that time of year when students are wearing multiple layers, and our lost and found is full of fleeces, sweatshirts, hats, mittens, gloves, and (as always) water bottles. If you can please take the time to label clothing with your family's name, we would be so grateful and have an easier time returning it.
EAST BURKE TREE DECORATING
Parent organizers have entered Riverside in the Burke Area Chamber of Commerce Tree Decorating Competition, on the green in East Burke village, with extra thanks to Tim Scott Realty for teaming with us to provide decoration materials. This is a friendly competition and all winning funds go to the charity of our choice: the H.O.P.E. backpack program.

Please bring your family to come join some fun this week so we have our tree decorated in time for the judging next week! Come join any of the festive activities listed below:
  • Friday, December 9, 4:00-5:00 pm: Let's gather around the tree on the green in East Burke, decorate and get in the spirit of the season. We will bring the ornaments made at school last week, but feel free to add any you make at home! Dress warmly and feel free to bring something warm to drink! This is meant to be a family event - no childcare is offered.
  • Sunday, December 11th, 3:00-5:00 pm: Feel free to attend the Burke Chamber of Commerce Holiday party and tree lighting ceremony. They'll have cider, donuts, a choral performance, and an announcement of the winners.
SKATING & GYMNASTICS FRIDAY
This Friday afternoon K-8 students in:
  • Ignis, Terra, and Aqua houses will go ice skating at Fenton Chester Arena, next to the main building at Lyndon Institute. Please pick those students up there at 3:15.
  • Caelum house will go to Kingdom Gymnastics at the Green Mountain Mall on Route 5 in St. Johnsbury. Please pick those students up there at 3:15.
Next week, December 16, all 6-8th graders will go ice skating, and PK-5th graders will have final activities at school before the holiday vacation. Pick up at school for elementary students will be at 1:15, and at the rink for middle school students will be at 1:30.
WINTER CONCERT
Yet another event we're thrilled to enjoy for the first time since 2019... our PK-8th grade Winter Concert & Art Show will be on Wednesday, December 14 at 5:30 pm at the Lyndon Institute Auditorium. Marie and Elly have been working hard with each class and some combined groups to show off student learning with music and studio arts, we hope you will be there to see it. Student art work created this trimester will be on display in the hallway outside the auditorium.

Some details:
  • We will be taking K-8 students by bus to rehearse at the auditorium that Wednesday afternoon, and pick up will be at 3:00/3:30 there.
  • All students should arrive at 5:00 pm, dressed in attractive, concert attire (suggested no jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, or sneakers).
  • Please plan to pick up art work and take it home after the performance.
  • There will be two halves, with elementary students performing in the first half and welcome to leave at intermission if that's best for their evening routines.
  • During the half that students are not performing, they should sit with their families in the audience.
  • Marie expects the whole performance to conclude around 7:00 pm.
MYTHOLOGY DAY
Next Friday, December 16, will be our annual Mythology Day celebration. It is the half day before the holiday vacation, and so Early Dismissal will be at 1:15 for PK-5th graders at Riverside and 1:30 for 6th-8th graders at the ice rink.

During the week leading up to Mythology Day, elementary students will feature their costumes and brief presentations at different assemblies, and there will be more detail about that schedule in next week's Monday Memo.

During that Friday morning’s assembly, 6th-8th grade students will be in costume and speak about their individual characters. Afterwards, K-7th graders will rotate by house through a variety of activities led by the 8th graders. These lesson activities are an important step in the development of leadership skills for the 8th graders, as they plan and then facilitate the same one multiple times.

At the end of the day, all K-8th graders will participate in the "Urn of Fate," a classically themed gift-exchange. Each student should bring in a simple, wrapped gift (a guideline for the value being $5 or less), by Thursday the 15th and give them to Jamie (K-2nd grade gifts), Hanna (3rd-5th gifts), or Nathan (6th-8th gifts). This year we will continue exchanging gifts in these groups, so you can find something attractive for a student of similar age: K-2nd, 3rd-5th, and 6th-8th.

The Afterschool and Extended Day Programs will run, please email McKenna or Sean specifically if your child(ren) will be attending so they can plan the long afternoon accordingly.
TEACHER APPRECIATION MEALS
If you are inspired to present your child(ren)'s teacher(s) with a gift this season, instead of purchasing something, please join in the PAG's tradition of providing breakfast, lunch, and leftovers for all our staff during the final week of school in December. If you don't want to cook and your schedule allows, you can help by setting- and cleaning-up a meal.

PAG Leader Deandra Early (kindergartener June and 2nd grader Henry) has set up a Meal Train to facilitate sign ups. We are feeding 22 people, so it takes a village to pull this off and we encourage everyone to sign up for a slot. Dietary restrictions and specifications are listed next to each meal. Thank you so much for your contribution - Riverside faculty & staff look forward to this every year! If you have any questions please reach out to Deandra.
CLOTHING DRIVE
Students in the service elective have formed a clothing drive committee. Our goal is to work with local organizations (HOPE and Salvation Army) to provide winter gear to those who don't have access. We would like outerwear clothing such as warm jackets, long-sleeve shirts, hats, gloves, mittens, pants, snow pants, and winter boots. We have bins to drop clothes into on the porch of the house and the barn entrance. Thank you in advance for all of your donations.
COCOA FUNDRAISER
Cocoa this week will be for elementary school students on Friday, and they should bring their order money to their teachers by Thursday. There will be no "IOUs." Cups of cocoa are $1 and toppings are 50 cents each.
NEW CLUB! HIP HOP DANCE
7th grader Gabe and Sean are running a hip-hop dance club for any middle schoolers that would like to join on Tuesdays from 3:45-4:30, no experience necessary. We will learn various dances through tutorials and eventually put together a routine.
MATHCOUNTS CLUB
5-8th grade Mathcounts club will meet today from 3:30-4:30 pm upstairs in the house.
RECORDER CLUB
K-2 Recorder Club will meet on Wednesday this week from 3:15-4:00.
INDOOR SOCCER CLUB
Sean will be starting an indoor soccer club. We'll play 3v3 or 4v4. To start it will only have 12 openings and will just be for middle school students. It will run on Thursday, from 3:30-4:30. Please email Sean if your child is interested.
CRAZY 8s
3-5th grade Crazy 8s club will meet for the final time this Wednesday from 3:40-4:30. Please remember to pick up your child when the session ends and not expect them to return to the Extended Day Program. Note: our last meeting date will be December 7.
CHESS CLUB
K-8th grade Chess Club will meet this Thursday beginning at 3:30 for all grade and ability levels. Kids may be picked up whenever. Ideally, most of the elementary students would be picked up after 45 minutes to an hour of chess (4:15 - 4:30) as it is a long time to concentrate on things after a long day of school. Nathan will stay until 5:00 for those that want the extra time. If any parents want to contribute snacks to share, it would be appreciated.
PENNY WARS!
The Riverside Student Council has started a "penny war" for the school. Penny wars is a fundraiser where classes earn points by collecting pennies. Pennies count as one point, but larger denominations count against a class's total, so students are encouraged to make larger donations to other classes and bring pennies for their own, with all funds going to charity. All of the proceeds will go to an organization that supports local refugees. Penny Wars ends this Thursday, 12/8.
WINTER VACATION CAMPS AT THE FAIRBANKS MUSEUM
The Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury is offering camp programs during the Winter Vacation week: February 27 - March 3. They go from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM, with an extended day option until 3:00 PM. Cost: $135 for members or $150 for non-members, the cost for extended day option is an additional $100 for members or $120 for non-members. More information and registration are here.
  • Polar Opposites: (Ant)arctic Animals (Ages 5-8): Join us as we explore the different creatures that have found impressive ways to brave the extreme cold! Each day we will focus on a couple of creatures and their adaptations to brave the freezing temperatures of the North and South Poles through games, activities, and crafts. We will also enjoy time playing outside in the snow ourselves!
  • Dinosaurs: The Past & the Curious (Ages 9-12): Are you ready to fly with the pterosaurs, walk with the dinosaurs, and swim with the mosasaurs? Go beyond fossils and travel back in time to explore the lives of prehistoric creatures! Campers will become paleontologists and learn about life in ancient environments throughout Earth's history.
EMBODIMENT FOR HOPE
Parent Madeleine Balcom (4th grader Azro, 8th grader Sylvan) is helping to organize a holiday benefit for H.O.P.E. of four yoga classes at 6:30 on December 8, 15, and 22. This week's class will be taught by parent Kristine Olson (preschooler Maeve). Cost is donation of money or a toy. The classes will take place at Creative Healing and Fitness at 518 Main St., Lyndonville.
A NOTE FROM ROY ABOUT GIVING
You have probably received your annual fund letter by now. In that letter, I tried to show how we as a school seek to fulfill our mission by providing the best possible environment for our students to learn and thrive, even when it costs us extra to do. Many of these “extras” are central to who we are, such as outings like field trips and skiing to better build community, small class sizes, or extensive extra supports and enrichment for students. We could not do these things for the cost of tuition alone. In essence, we seek to provide a top-tier private school experience for your child(ren) with an income model that is not even on par with a local public school. We can’t do that without your support.

Our families support our school in very many ways, and we are grateful for all of them; whether it is helping with the yard sale, buying (or selling) raffle tickets, volunteering, or giving. Strong community support has enabled us to thrive during some difficult times over the last few years. If you have not given to the annual fund yet, please consider doing so today- no gift is too small! Any donation you make is a gesture of support for the model of education you have chosen for your child(ren) and is greatly appreciated! You can give online by going here. Thanks so much!
