Reminders As the Weather Turns Cold

As we enter cold and flu season, please encourage your daughter to stay home and rest up when she is not feeling well. If your daughter will be absent for an extended period of time, notify her counselor who can support her and facilitate communication with teachers.

As necessary, if your daughter has a medical action plan or needs to update a plan please contact School Nurse Mrs. Nina Horn. Also, if your daughter needs to take a prescription medication during school hours, the medication must be given to Mrs. Horn so she may administer it. She may be reached at nhorn@sja1890.org or 216.251.6788 ext. 213.

Hearing screenings for Grades 9 and 11 will be conducted by Mrs. Horn beginning in November.

Academy Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Thursday, September 15-Friday, October 15), the Saint Joseph Academy community participated in various learning, social and wellness activities.

Students participated in a fun trivia game. Spanish Teacher and Spanish Club moderator Mrs. Tina Marie Plesca asked the trivia questions and after revealing each question's answer, she provided additional facts and history. Did you know that the most popular sport in Cuba is baseball?

Breast Cancer Awareness Week

Throughout the week, the entire Saint Joseph Academy community raised breast cancer awareness. On Tuesday, the community joined together to wear pink attire and accessories. As part of a Wellness activity, students created a prayer board for the community so they could write names of loved ones impacted by breast cancer. Students also placed a picture of St. Peregrine, the patron saint for cancer patients and a pink candle in the Holy Family Chapel in the Academy building.

Additional ways the community raised awareness included:

  • Strawberry parfaits for purchase in the dining hall
  • Pink ribbons for faculty and staff to wear throughout October
  • Bilingual morning prayer for all those impacted by breast cancer
