President's Message:

Dear AIA Members,
 
Looking back at our annual meeting in December, we polled the members attending on what services should be enhanced to create value to our membership. 

The following is a condensed version of the top 6 responses members identified. We have also identified some achievements accomplished this year.
 
  • Government / Public / Contractor advocacy
    • Continue discussions on QBS (Quality Based Selection)
    • Meeting this week with AGC to discuss Certificate of Merit
    • Task force formed to review Article 20 content / language
    • Senate Bill 954 just passed the Senate this week (Amended)
    • Lien Law discussion continues
    • Expediting "Path to Licensure" discussions continue 
  • Networking / Best practice sessions/benchmarking
    • AIA National events
    • Healthcare Conference
    • Annual Awards in two weeks
    • Mackinac Mid-summer Conference
    • Fall Design Retreat 
  • HSW learning units
    •  Individual Chapters /sections scheduling at a good pace
    • Conference and seminars with added HSW credits
    • More sessions are being planned in coming months 
  • Engagement of alternate professions/organizations
    • Construction Association of Michigan symposium on teaming
    • Association of General Contractors (AGC) Collaboration
    • Michigan Architectural Foundation (MAF) Collaboration  
  • Improve communication / advertising campaign
    •  Recently added part time staff person to focus on Public Relations and acquiring new members
  • Emerging Professional Development (EPC) & bridging architectural schools
    • EPC Committees are scheduling monthly meetings
    • Fall event will be planned 
Congratulations to the Michigan Board and the individual Chapters / Sections that have committed their time and even money in advancing the profession. The mission of providing value to our membership is still one of our main goals. Please join me in sending this message to all architects across the State of Michigan. Individual participation is a greater value to the organization and is extremely rewarding. Your expertise, knowledge and friendship could one day be inspirational to the next generation of architects.  
 
Finally, I would like to thank the more than 100+ members that attended the AIA National Conference in Philadelphia. It you have never been to Philadelphia it is definitely worth a trip!

Good Morning!

This year's Honor Awards held at The Henry Ford Museum was a great success with over 280 attendees. If you missed the celebration we will be exhibiting the Honor Awards boards and projects as well as the recognition winners the month of July at the DCDT at the AIA Michigan office building. Look for more information in the Monday Minutes.

Mid Summer Conference registration is open until July 5th. Please register early to get your room at the Grand Hotel. See below for links to registration.

Welcome Rick McCosh

AIA Michigan has hired a Membership Coordinator. Rick will be working with the chapters to increase membership and help the new AIA Michigan Sections.

Rick is seasoned in an array of association experiences, specializing in volunteer management, leadership and program development, event planning, component relations, governance and project management. Rick is a native Michigander who has recently relocated to the Detroit Metro Area by way of Washington D.C. where Rick spent 8 years as the Director of Chapter Services at the ASID. We are looking forward to having Rick as part of the AIAMI team.

The second annual I Look Up Film Challenge launched at AIA Convention 2016 with the debut of a   short documentary film on Auburn University's Rural Studio . This year, the competition is challenging architects and filmmakers to team-up to create a short film that demonstrates architecture as a solution. For more, visit  ilookup.org/filmchallenge

  • HED at the University of California, San Francisco designed an interdisciplinary environment that provided clinical simulation for surgery, emergency and intensive care patients.
  • George W. Auch announce it has purchased 3.66 acres off University Drive in downtown Pontiac, property that is expected to become the new corporate headquarters.
  • Rossetti designed Daytona International Speedway wins prestigious "Sports facility of the year" award.
  • SME is pleased to announce Mark Kramer, PE has been elected to the prestigious Council of Fellows of the Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA).
  • Dan Kinkead, AIA has joined SmithGroupJJR in Detroit, where he'll co-lead the Urban Design Practice with Michael Johnson in Ann Arbor.
  • The American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan (ACEC/M) has announced Michael Cooper, PE, PA of HED as its 2016-2017 President.
