WWII & UKRAINIAN REFUGEES: The Effects of War

This month we are illustrating the link between refugees then and now, from WWII to the current outbreak of war with the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. This connection cannot be ignored as many are citing the current situation as the largest refugee crisis since WWII. We remember the Forced March in which 2nd Lt. Robert Kurtz encountered refugees and witnessed their struggle alongside the plight of the POWs. Many refugees during WWII were Jewish people fleeing Nazi Germany for Allied liberated countries. Today, more than two million people have left their homes in Ukraine to seek refuge from the violence and invasion by Russia. They are taking trains out of Ukraine, driving in heavy traffic, and some even making long treks on foot to the borders. Surrounding countries are offering support and shelter but concern deepens as the resources and money given by many other nations and private charities to these countries may not keep up with the number of refugees.
The Green Box: At the Heart of the Purple Heart provides descriptions of the conditions of the Forced March that 2nd Lt. Robert Kurtz and thousands of other POWs, along with six million refugees, had to endure in the winter and spring of 1945. This portion of his story can help us understand, in a small way, the dire situation refugees are in and how the displacement and fear they face are not a tragedy of the past but a crisis of our current world. By looking at Robert Kurtz’s personal experience throughout WWII and its aftermath, we begin to appreciate how many individual lives and stories are affected by war. More than two million refugees means that more than two million unique lives, hopes, and stories are threatened. We recognize the need to hear these stories, from WWII and today; we hope to help.
