News from your community trail!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Greetings!

This Thanksgiving we have so much to be thankful for in our community, our families, and the beautiful mountains we call home. At Whitefish Legacy Partners we are so thankful for our volunteers, donors, and partners who make our work possible, and we are thankful to be part of such a vibrant, close knit community who value and support our trails and open lands. We hope this holiday week you're able to enjoy time on the trail with your loved ones.
This week we headed out on the Whitefish Trail to ask trail users to share something they're thankful this holiday season.
Logan, age 4
"I'm thankful for my record player and my favorite Beatles record!"
John & Juno
"I'm thankful for my health."
Kevin & Rocky
"I'm thankful that Covid finally seems to be in the rearview mirror."
Shawn & Talon, age 3
"We're thankful for this sunshine in November!"
Miriam
"I'm thankful for kindness and humanity."
Resort Tax Renewal VICTORY by a landslide!
The November 2 ballot initiative to renew the Whitefish 3% resort tax on luxury goods passed by an incredible 89%! This means that starting in 2025, 2% of the resort tax revenue collected, or an estimated $100,000, will support Whitefish Trail maintenance each year. This represents approximately 2/3 of the annual Whitefish Trail operations and maintenance budget. Having this level of long-term funding secured from 2025-2045 will ensure that our community trails are maintained for the enjoyment of future generations. It will also allow us to expand our efforts to manage and maintain the trail and surrounding conservation lands to an even higher standard to ensure that as trail use continues to grow, and our trails continue to age, they will continue to offer high-quality recreation opportunities for our community.
Mid-November Trail Report
The warm days and freezing nights have begun to turn the recent snow into a slick path along the trail. Conditions are variable throughout with patches of snow, ice, and bare ground. The Beaver Lakes area, along with higher elevation areas like Big Mountain have accumulated a bit more snow.

The DNRC is continues work on the timber sale in Beaver Lakes. The majority of upcoming work will be off the road accessing the North Beaver Trailhead. Up to date information can be found on the Beaver Lakes Trailhead DNRC information board. Please use caution, be aware of crews and logging trucks, at road-trail crossings, and respect all posted trail or road closures. Curious about the objectives and timber sale plans? Check out our recent Forests for the Future virtual education program.
We've received recent reports of recreationists not wearing blaze orange in the woods and on the trail. Please remember that hunting season continues through November 28 and that most of the lands surrounding the Whitefish Trail are open to hunting. Be sure that you, and your dogs, are wearing orange at all times.

Hunters should not shoot within 1/4 mile of the trail or adjacent homes. To report any concerns, please contact the FWP Game Warden at (406) 249-6231.

Send us your fall trail reports and photos to info@whitefishlegacy.org!

Holbrook Overlook Construction Update
We have wrapped up Phase I of trail construction at Holbrook Overlook with the upper stacked loops completed totaling 2.1 miles. The remaining 1.8 miles will be completed Spring 2022.
Trailhead construction is underway with a 20 car parking area nearing completion. We are looking forward to having the parking area and upper trails open for use this winter! With sweeping views of the valley and easy access on the way to and from Whitefish Mountain Resort, we're sure Holbrook will fast become a community favorite for hiking, snowshoeing, and winter dog walking, providing a perfect foot traffic alternative to the groomed nordic trails at the Big Mountain Trailhead. Trailhead services this winter will be limited with a plowed parking area, port-a-potty, and temporary sign kiosk.
Stay tuned for information on the Opening Celebration!
Upcoming Events
