"One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?" Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, "Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost." So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets."
John 6:8-13
Feeding the Five Thousand is one of the greatest miracles Jesus had done during his ministry. It was so marvelous that people tried to make him their king after this miracle. People today also tend to focus on Jesus and this incredible miracle he had done and wish this same miracle to be done in their lives. However, we have to remember that this great miracle started from the giving of a little boy. The boy's food was too small compared to the amount they needed to feed the people gathered around. However, Jesus took the food and blessed them. As a result, the five thousand were satisfied, and they gathered twelve baskets of leftovers.
Each of us is just like the boy in the scripture. Maybe we think what we have is too small, not enough even to satisfy ourselves. However, the scripture tells us that it is Jesus who makes our scarcity abundant. This time, God invites us to bring what we have to God. Moreover, God tells us that God will create abundance out of our scarcity. Let us respond "Amen" to the invitation. Let us give ourselves to God.
