Member Highlight from Sunflower Care Home - Emporia, KS
"We have been so blessed with the amount of support we have gotten from everyone in our community on our new facility. Last week we got the pleasure of having Governor Laura Kelly visit our Legacy building.

Governor Kelly, was able to meet resident Freda Venning one of our residents who just turned 102. Freda was the first cenetarium our governor has ever met. Freda was so excited to talk with her and shake her hand. Smiles where definitely ear to ear."
AHCA Documentary Wins Capital Emmy Award

Accolades Continue for Association’s Short Film Focused on Nursing Homes During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Washington,
D.C. — The American Health Care Association (AHCA) documentary, “Closed Doors, Open Hearts: Nursing Homes and COVID-19,” received a National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter (Capital) Emmy Award Saturday evening in the Documentary – Cultural/Topical category.

The documentary, which was up against three other nominees, features two nursing
homes on opposite sides of the country and their struggles and perseverance at
the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights the heroic caregivers who
continued to serve through the most challenging times. It also provides a
glimpse into what has really happened inside nursing homes since early 2020 and
why it is so important to continue supporting these vital providers’ ongoing
efforts to keep residents safe and healthy. READ MORE

Pandemic "Ripple Effects" Keeping Hospital Beds Occupied\

CNN International (6/24, McPhillips) reported "ripple effects" of the coronavirus pandemic "are keeping [hospital] beds full and patients away from the care they need," and "most nursing homes are limiting new patients because of staffing shortages, driving the average hospital stay up to be longer than it was pre-pandemic." Mark Parkinson, President and CEO of the American Health Care Association, said the pandemic has "made a really difficult job even tougher," and as a result hospitals "just aren’t able to discharge people like they typically could." CNN added that an AHCA survey from May found "more than 60% of nursing homes are limiting new admissions because of staffing shortages."

In Case You Missed It
Have you received a letter recently from the OIG?

This letter is legit. The OIG is asking for the facility input. They are doing research into the impacts that COVID-19 had on long term care. While it’s not required that you respond, KHCA and AHCA recommends that you do. This helps to provide the best perspective of the impact COVID has had on long term care.

Clinical Update from KHCA Consultant Linda Farrar

On June 23, the AHCA State Affiliates held a networking call, talking about several subjects. One of the subjects is that the Office of Inspector General (OIG) is sending letters to facilities asking for facility input. Currently the OIG is doing research into the impacts that COVID-19 has had on long term care. It is not required that a facility responds to the request, it would be helpful to all providers in the long term. AHCA is recommending that if a facility receives a letter asking for input to a survey that the facility complete it. This will help to provide the best perspective of the impact COVID has had on long term care. We just want you all to know that if you get this letter, it really is legitimate. A sample of what the letter might look like is at the end of this article. READ MORE
Effort To Expand Access To Palliative Care Gains Bipartisan Support

McKnight’s Senior Living (6/24, Bonvissuto) reports, "A demonstration project to deliver palliative care no matter where an individual lives – including in assisted living communities – and earlier in the disease process has gained bipartisan support." In a letter to CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure dated June 16, "members of the Senate Comprehensive Care Caucus asked that the CMS Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation implement a community-based pilot project to enable palliative care to be provided at the same time as curative treatments for people with serious illnesses or injuries." An American Health Care Association / National Center for Assisted Living spokeswoman "said that the groups support ensuring increased access to person-centered care wherever the recipient calls home," adding, "Our residents are elderly, often with multiple health conditions, and they deserve the best care and support regardless of where they fall on the long-term care continuum."
