Happy Sunday, Pride,

I hope each of you had a wonderful and restful weekend. My family and I headed north for a weekend trip to Appalachian Ski Mtn. This trip was planned before we knew it was going to snow, so it was a nice bonus to finally see some snow this season.

We just finished another incredible week at Riverwalk Academy. The week ended with two wonderful dances that were student-initiated and student led. About five weeks ago, a group of students from our yearbook class came and pitched the idea of having the dances to the school’s leadership team. After some facilitation and many planning meetings, both dances went off without a hitch.

While we celebrated with this group on Friday night the success of their dances, the fun really begins next week when we will meet to reflect about the process and outcomes. We most definitely will want to do this again next year; with some tweaks. For example, we’re hoping to add a “homecoming” week that concludes with a dance for our high school students.

All in all, I couldn’t have been prouder of our student leaders and co-facilitators: Ms. Tillman, Ms. McConnell, and Mr. Carroll.

I also wanted to share with you an incredible experience that I had Thursday that caught me by surprise and it’s something that I won’t forget. I’ve had a few moments like this over my time at Riverwalk.   Some of these moments are obvious, like our first graduation, and some are just small moments that probably didn’t create the same reaction for others. For example, on December 3, 2019, I was leaving school in awe of all of the activity that was taking place after school.

Fast forward to this past Thursday. It was our basketball teams’ final games. There was something about this night that created that same feeling for me that I had back on that December 3rd. I don’t think it was anything in particular, rather it was a combination of small events rolled up into an awesome evening. It was like a perfect recipe that came together:

  • 1 part, Kemper Dorsey (7th grade) hitting 2 3-pointers and the crowd going wild every time he launched a shot
  • 1 part, seeing our senior athletes being recognized prior to the start of the varsity game: Austin Mungo, Rob Lafortune, Patrick Keller, Zachary Childers, and Efua Adabo
  • 1 part, seeing Kenneth Baionno (8th grade) and his friends stomping their feet on the bleachers every time the Lewisville Lions were taking a shot.
  • 1 part, seeing over 25 staff members in attendance during this final game.

Lions, thank you for helping make these memories for me, our staff, our students, and our families.

In Strength and Blessings,

~Dr. Compton

A Note from Ms. Carr & Ms. Teague

Greetings,

It has been another fabulous week in counseling at Riverwalk! The Random Acts of Kindness lessons began and the kids loved them! Our display “In a World Where You Can Be Anything…Be Kind” can be found in the hallway; teachers and staff are adding to this display by noting students who demonstrate kindness and recording those acts on hearts. The staff is “tagging” each other with random acts of kindness, and it seems even mother nature has gotten in on it. We have had sunshine for more than one day!

As we continue our focus on National Random Acts of Kindness Month, it’s the perfect opportunity to reinforce compassion and empathy in your child. From what we hear from the students, they have been doing more acts of kindness at home.

What is a random act of kindness?

Performing a random act of kindness is exactly what it sounds like: deliberately attempting to brighten someone else’s day by doing something kind for no specific reason. The intention is to practice generosity and selflessness, but research has shown that there are, in fact, many benefits to practicing kindness. For children, showing kindness towards family, friends, their community, and strangers strengthens skills such as respect, responsibility, empathy, and compassion. We hope each of you has been enjoying the kindness calendar we shared previously.

This week’s image is a result of our lessons. We are reading the book, Kindness is my Superpower for all K-3 grades. For K-1 we are having the students decorate and cut out their own superhero emblem. For 2-3, they are decorating and cutting out their own superhero capes. We are hanging them all from the ceiling in the hallway with our display (image to come next week). For 4-6, they are playing Kindness BINGO. It has been a blast for us, and we hope for the students as well.

(((Hugs))),

Mrs. Carr and Ms. Teague

Read Across America Week

Each year at the beginning of March we celebrate Read Across America Week. This week is a time to motivate students to read, especially books that promote diversity and inclusion. Fall in love with reading this week by participating in our dress up days. We’d also love for you to help us duct tape our principal by telling us all about your favorite book.

A Note from Dr. Dempsey

Hello Pride!

We had a great week and it culminated with our first middle school dance! It was so fun to see the kids excited and everything went well. We appreciate your help and support as we planned this event. I am looking forward to more opportunities like this for our students.

Please continue to assist your students in keeping up with their work and monitor grades in PowerSchool.

We are continuing our month of Random Acts of Kindness, please encourage your student to participate. Sometimes just a compliment or a kind word can turn someone's day around.

Thank you for your continued trust in us and please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Warmly

Christy Dempsey

A Note from Ms. Menges

Hello Everyone!

I have had a lot of fun this week starting preparation for Random Acts of Kindness Week! We have put a big map on the wall in the halls with the words "In a world where you can be anything...be kind." Around this, we will put hearts that teachers have written acts of kindness on that they have seen their students do. I can't wait for the wall to fill up with all the random acts of kindness our students participate in. We are also encouraging our staff to participate as well to set an example!

Here's what we have going on this week...

Things to note:

-8th graders, I have sent emails out to parents regarding IGP (individualized graduation plan) meetings for this year. Please sign up for a meeting time, my goal is for 100% parent participation! Sign up here.

-9th graders, IGP (individualized graduation plan) meetings have been going on for several weeks. Parents, you should have received an email where you could have signed up for a time slot to meet about your student. Please do this if you haven't already! Email me to set up a meeting time.

Quote of the Week:

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”

-Helen Keller

Ms. Menges
