June is one of my favorite months of the year because that is when our end of year ESL celebrations and High School Equivalency graduations occur. This year, during both occasions, the students made speeches, rather than elected officials or other well-known community leaders. One high school graduate spoke via a pre-recorded video from Ukraine, where he is providing food and supplies for those in need. An HSE alumni, who was once part of the plain sect community, now holds a Bachelor's in Social Work, is employed by Tenfold, and is planning to pursue a master’s degree. All the ESL student speakers expressed gratitude for their teachers and IU13 for instilling in them the confidence to meet their educational, family, and employment-related goals. Based on our end of year celebratory events, without a doubt, we are achieving our mission of educating and inspiring lifelong learners and transforming lives!

50th Anniversary Celebration

|
IU13's 50th Anniversary Celebration was held on June 9th at our Lancaster County headquarters, where we welcomed the community to explore our services through interactive displays, games, and conversations with staff. We're so grateful to the businesses, people, and families that have helped us make a difference in the Lancaster and Lebanon communities. Many thanks to all who made the event a success!

On June 16th, alongside our partners Literacy Council and Milagro House, IU13 held a graduation ceremony to congratulate and celebrate students who earned their high school equivalency (GED/HiSet) diploma. During the ceremony, several students highlighted their journey of success and the path that led them there.
One of those speakers was Daniel Beiler, (not pictured) a 2021-22 Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon graduate. Daniel grew up in Lancaster County in the Amish community, receiving an 8th grade education. After earning his GED, he became an EMT and now works for Hope Ministries, leading a team throughout the world wherever a disaster strikes. He is currently in Ukraine distributing food and transporting Ukrainian citizens to safety. He attained his goal of a GED to further his education and become an EMT.

IU13 is pleased to announce that we’ve been chosen as one of United Way of Lancaster's Level Up & Launch Grant recipients! Our grant of $35,000 will be used to schedule meetings with local employers to provide some introductory training and develop a potential “game plan” for additional business-wide cultural navigation services and/or language classes at the worksite. The best part is that as our supporters donate to match this grant, United Way will match dollar-for-dollar up to the initial grant amount ($35,000), and these funds are on top of the original $35,000 grant. You can help match here.

Two weeks ago, both our Lancaster and Lebanon locations celebrated English as a Second Language (ESL) students who had completed 50+ hours in class and/or displayed outstanding performance in their work. ESL teachers and family members joined in the festivities; they enjoyed customized ecards, food, student speeches, and the yearly flag ceremony. The flag ceremony gave students the opportunity to hold flags that represented different countries while marching to the song Coming to America by Neil Diamond. Students appreciated being recognized for their improvements.
