Stickwork Install at HSBF

After a very successful inaugural season, we are setting the bar high in 2022 by welcoming Patrick Dougherty to HSBF in June. Patrick is the award-winning, internationally known, creative artisit behind Stickwork, a larger than life, interactive creation made entirely of sticks.

Over the last thirty-some years, he has built over 300 of these works, and become internationally acclaimed. His sculptures have been seen worldwide---from Scotland to Japan to Brussels, and all over the United States.

As the winner of numerous awards including the North Carolina Artist Fellowship Award, Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and the Henry Moore Foundation Fellowship, Patrick has made a tremendous impact on the art world and created quite the following.

With a focus on cultural history, community

celebration, and outdoor engagement (amongst others), we are excited to welcome Patrick and his son Sam to the property to share their passion and creativity with all who visit.

The project is set to launch in the beginning of June and take around three weeks to complete. Once built, the sculpture will last 2-3 years.

Patrick and his son Sam do request help from volunteers for the install. If you would like to help, contact Drew Richmond at drew@horseshoebayfarms.org.

Our History (one piece at a time)

Horse Barn

The Horse Barn sits on the North East corner of the property and is one of the favorite of the barns to be visited. Original to the farm, its purpose was to serve as the feeding and sleeping stalls for the team of work horses.

The work horses were believed to be Percherons and consisted of 4-6 pairs of horses. Handlers were hired to ensure the good health of the horses and work them throughout the farm. The horses preceded tractors and were used in a variety of ways on the farm, including the hauling of hay to feed the Holsteins.

The Horse Barn, like the other structures, was of excellent build and featured running water and electricity. In addition, it also featured concrete floors and the stall floors were made of wood bricks. The wood bricks are still in place today.

The rich history of HSBF is still being discovered by the staff and volunteers. As a critical component of our mission, we must gather as much of the history of this iconic Door County property as possible.

If you have any photos, stories, or connections to HSBF, or see that we may have a made an error in the history that we share, please contact us.

We want to hear from you!

2024 Strategic Plan

The board and staff are planning out the next 3 years for HSBF. Our 2024 strategic plan will focus on main objectives that were derived from the Master Plan, data from our first year of operations in 2021, and group brainstorming sessions.

This planning is critical to our success as we navigate our first few years of operation.

The plan is on track to be approved in March and will begin April 1. Once approved, the plan will be available for all to visit on our website.

Youth Programing

We hosted our first winter youth education program this past January. On a balmy 25 degree Wednesday, 21 students and 4 teachers from Venture Academy in Algoma, WI took a historical tour of HSBF.

The Algoma Venture Academy is a public charter school within the school district for kids entering 7th -12th grade. The students are engaged in project-based learning and experiences throughout Door and Kewaunee Counties.

While learning about the history of HSBF, we shared lots a great stories with each other and the group did a great job trekking through the snowy property.

We look forward to future visits from Venture Academy as we both evolve and grow as relatively new entities.
