  President's Letter

Dear Fellow LWV Members:

Election year is upon us. March 5th is California’s new primary date and mail-in ballots will be sent to all registered voters this week. You may be surprised by the choices on your personal ballot. Check it out at Vote411 here. Click on “What’s On Your Ballot” and enter your address to view your personal ballot. In partnership with the LWV Santa Barbara, we are contacting candidates in Supervisory Districts 3 and 4 to complete their candidate statements. Check back often as VOTE411 will be updated as candidate’s add information. And visit our website here for video replays of LWVNSBC/AAUW Lompoc-Vandenberg Supervisor Candidate Forums for Districts 3 and 4, held February 1st.

Under our new focus of providing education, advocacy, and voter support in ALL North Santa Barbara County cities, we are forming Advisory Committees in Santa Maria, Guadalupe, Cuyama, Los Alamos, Lompoc, Solvang, Buellton, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, and Vandenberg. If you, or anyone you know, lives in these areas and can speak with us about community priorities, please let us know and we will reach out with an invitation to be on an Advisory Committee. The task to offer support to this wide array of cities is a bit daunting but together we can do this!

Have you ever considered working a poll? I did this last year and it was an eye-opener. If you have been thinking you might like to observe OR work as a paid poll-worker please call 1-800-722-8683, email here, or visit the County Elections Office here.

LWVNSBC is excited to hold our bi-annual National Program Planning Meeting on February 21st. The result of the meeting will be recommendations of issues for top priority by the powerful national LWVUS. Why not plan to be part of that process? LWV members only may vote but prospective members are invited to join in the conversation. The convenience of Zoom will allow maximum participation. What is the burning issue YOU would list as top priority?? To join via Zoom, click here.

If you want to know where the LWVUS currently stands on various issues, click here to check out Impact on Issues 2022-2024.

Before signing off… this is a pitch for support of our local print media. We are witnessing an unprecedented decline in the number of locally owned and operated newspapers. The younger set gets news online where conspiracy theories and falsehoods may dominate.

Won’t you consider supporting your local print media with letters of support and subscriptions? Media is not called “the 4th estate” of democracy for nothing. Quiz: What are the other 3? (Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.) Want to learn more? Check out “The Fourth Estate As a Final Check,” an article from the Yale Law School here.

Public enemy #1 in an election year is Fake News! Consider watching a 2018 LWV forum, Fake News! Co-sponsored by LWV, PCPA, and Allan Hancock College. I could not believe how relevant the comments still are from the brilliant experts; the late Dr. Kate Adams, AHC Librarian Kellye Cohn, Santa Maria Times Editor Marga Cooley, Radio Bilingue Founder and CEO Hugo Morales, and famous newsman Jerry Roberts. Watch it on our website here. You will be spellbound and learn something new perhaps.

A sincere thank you for your membership in LWVNSBC. Not a member yet? You can fix that by clicking here.

Until next month….

Vote Local, You Vote Counts More!

Sincerely,

Virginia
