2019 Fair Parade, driven by Fred Wemple and Jim Wolcott

Fair Accepting Nominations for Old Timers and Parade Grand Marshal

The Lassen County Fair has opened nominations for two big annual honors, the Old Timer of the Year award and the Fair Parade Grand Marshal. Both awards will be celebrated at this year’s fair, which runs from July 19th through the 23rd.

The Old Timer of the Year

The Old Timer of the Year award is judged on kindness and service to our community. The nominee has to be at least 60 years old and have lived in Lassen County for at least 10 years.

This award honors a senior who has demonstrated outstanding volunteerism, leadership, helping, teaching, mentoring, or advocating for others in Lassen County.

The award is based on dedication, overarching commitment, and demonstrated impact on those served. The nominee must be willing and able to attend the Lassen County Fair Parade on July 22nd.

Parade Grand Marshal

The Grand Marshal award is a century old tradition based on accomplishments and contributions to the community. The nominee will be selected on the basis of their contributions to the quality of life in Lassen County through civic or social services; humanitarianism; personal achievements in the areas of arts, sports, etc.; or based on the distinction that they have brought to Lassen County resulting from achievements elsewhere.

The nominee should be a current or long term past resident of Lassen County. The nominee must be willing to act as Grand Marshal and be willing and able to attend the Lassen County Fair Parade on July 22nd.

Nomination forms can be found online at lassencountyfair.org or by visiting the Lassen County Fair office. The nomination forms must be submitted by April 10th and include a brief history and accomplishments of the nominee along with the contact information of the person who submitted the nomination form.

The winner will be decided at the April 11th Lassen County Fair Advisory meeting.

Pursuit Through Uptown Ends

with Collision on Carroll Street

An erratic chase through uptown Susanville, which briefly reached speeds of around 60mph on residential streets, ended abruptly Wednesday evening after the fleeing driver struck a curb on Mill Street, lost two wheels, and then plowed into a parked car on Carroll Street.

Officers had been dispatched to the intersection of Main Street and N. Sacramento Street around ten o’clock after receiving a report that a vehicle had just struck a stop sign while leaving a nearby business.

Officers began searching the area for suspect, reported to be a woman, and her vehicle, a gold-colored 2000 Cadillac Escalade.

Police spotted her again, tailgating a vehicle on Ash Street approaching Main Street.

“It was later determined the suspect vehicle was being blocked in by two witnesses who were in front of the vehicle attempting to make the vehicle stop,” explains Susanville Chief of Police Ryan Cochran.

“All parties turned onto Main Street and began driving westbound at a slow rate of speed. Susanville Police units pulled in behind and attempted to make a vehicle stop, using lights and sirens the vehicle failed to yield.”

Near the intersection of Main Street and Grand Avenue, the vehicle came to a complete stop and a patrol unit pulled in behind the suspect’s vehicle.

“The driver then placed the vehicle into reverse and backed into the patrol unit causing minor damage.”

And the chase was on. The suspect accelerated to speeds of around sixty miles per hour on Main Street, then turned south onto S. Weatherlow Street, running the red light at the intersection.

“The suspect vehicle then attempted to turn at Mill Street, when it hit the curb and knocked off both drivers’ side tires before hitting a parked vehicle on Carroll Street. The suspect vehicle traveled a few more yards but due to the damage sustained, it came to a rest on the east side of Carroll Street.”

The driver exited the vehicle and was immediately taken into custody without further incident.

The driver was identified as 46-year old, Garden Grove, CA resident Maitram Thi Hoang.

According to Chief Cochran, Hoang was booked into the Lassen County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, felony evading a Peace Officer, driving under the influence of alcohol, hit and run causing property damage and driving on a suspended driver’s license.

The case had been referred to the Lassen County District Attorney.

Monticola Club Offering Student Scholarships

The Etta Tarry Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a Lassen Community College graduate who is continuing their education at a four-year college or university.

Students interested in applying for these awards should contact the LHS counseling office for an application. The deadline to submit a completed application for all scholarships is 4:00p.m., on Friday, March 24th.

According to the organization the awards will be based on leadership skills, school involvement, community service, grades and financial need.

Georgianne Hall, Monticola scholarship committee member, said the recipients will be named and honored on April 20th at the club’s monthly luncheon meeting as well as the high school and college awards nights in May.

The first Monticola scholarship was awarded at Lassen High School in 1959 and more than one hundred and eighty scholarships have been awarded since.

Snowy uptown in the late 1920’s

Storm is Heaviest in 35 Years

February 3, 1922

Susanville is now being restored to conditions near normal following the severe snowstorm of last week when it was declared by old residents to have been the heaviest storm during February for thirty-five years was experienced.

Many trees broke under the weight of the snow and power lines went out of commission early during the storm. Power for lights consequently was out and the oil lamps of earlier days had to be pressed back into service.

Telephone and telegraph communication between Susanville and Reno and Susanville and Westwood was interrupted. The Grammar School was closed Friday because of the deep snow through which pupils would have to wade.

The heavy fall of snow in the mountains assures farmers and livestock men abundant water for the coming Summer and Fall.
