CDI sponsors receptions during the interview season for all fellowship and MGH residency and combined program applicants who are underrepresented in medicine (UiM). Our receptions will be virtual and take place in the evening. The CDI receptions are an excellent way for applicants to meet our community and learn about what we do. We are also holding three joint receptions with our colleagues at BWH CDI for joint program applicants. A detailed schedule with reception dates is below. Details on how to RSVP will be sent in a separate email.

On Wednesday, Equity and Community Health, unveiled a beautiful new piece of art - "The People's heART" - from Boston artist @ProblaK on the Bulfinch Lawn at the main hospital. It was wonderful to come together and celebrate this contribution and our work to make MGH a more welcoming and inclusive place.
The piece will hang in the Yawkey Building (on the wall above the cafeteria to the left of the staircase) for the upcoming month. If you are at the main campus, stop by to see it!

The Chester Pierce Research Society (CPRS) is sponsored by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI). CPRS is a speaker series named in honor of MGH's late Professor Emeritus in Psychiatry, Chester Pierce. Dr. Pierce was the first and most senior African-American physician-scientist at MGH. CPRS is designed to promote diversity and health equity by featuring the novel research of investigators to the MGH community.

Lucy Ogbu-Nwobodo, MD, MS, MAS, Fellow and Resident in Psychiatry at MGH and McLean Hospital, is the recipient of the Inaugural Equity, Social Justice, and Advocacy Award at HMS/HSDM. The Award will be presented during the inaugural lecture and award ceremony on Tuesday, November 30th from 12:00—1:30pm via Zoom.
Lucy was also selected as a Laughlin Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, which is noted to be the most prestigious award a Psychiatry Resident or Fellow can get and per their assertion, is someone “chosen from an elite pool of applicants deemed likely to make a significant contribution to the field of psychiatry.”

Volunteers Needed for the Holiday Season!

Roxbury Main Streets is hosting their 29th Annual holiday celebration on December 4th from 10 - 4. (See attached flyer) and they need assistance in wrapping gifts for the children and seniors! Last year, they wrapped a whopping 1200 gifts, so they really need our help.
If you are available on Saturday, November 27th or Sunday, November 28th any time between 12 and 5 PM, please register here (under MGB even if you work elsewhere)!

Join the SNMA Shadowing/Research Collective
|
|
|
The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is seeking physicians (attendings, residents, interns) who are willing to allow students to shadow them and/or become involved in their research. If you have time this semester (or in any semester in the future) please fill out this form. Additionally, If you know of other colleagues that would love to join the collective, please feel free to share the link.
Once part of the collective, students will independently reach out to you for shadowing and/or research opportunities. There is no longitudinal commitment except to be sporadically approached via email by curious students. If you are no longer able to answer student emails, let us know, and we can disable your line on the spreadsheet.

Nominations may include an individual or a group of individuals who have demonstrated a significant commitment to enhancing diversity above and beyond the routine role and responsibilities.
The Harold Amos Faculty Diversity Award recognizes HMS/HSDM faculty (clinical, pre-clinical, research, administrative) who have made significant achievements in moving HMS/HSDM toward being a diverse and inclusive community. Contributions might include developing models to advance diversity, achieving outcomes, increasing employment, supporting promotion, providing career development, identifying funding, assisting in producing scholarly work, addressing issues of recruitment and retention related to diversity, etc.
Eligibility: Faculty (Instructor through Professor), who are based at HMS/HSDM or an HMS-affiliated hospital or institution.

MGH ECOR Interim Support Funding Program 22-1

The Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) is now accepting applications for Interim Support Funding.
What are they?
The Interim Support Funding (ISF) Program is open to Principal Investigators during a lapse or delay in their research funding from the NIH or another Federal agency (e.g., the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense). Investigators must have applied for independent, long-term support (R01, R21, U01 and P01). The intent of the program is to rescue strong scientific programs that are in need of bridge funding in order to sustain their research. Applications will be accepted regardless of percentile or score, including applications that were not discussed. Financial need and the impact of the COVID pandemic will be taken into account.

Applications are now being accepted by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for the Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program
What is it?
The goal of the Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program is to recruit and retain individuals from gender, racial, ethnic, and other groups underrepresented in the life sciences, including those individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Fellows receive funding to support their postdoctoral training and may continue to receive funding during their early career years as independent faculty. Fellows participate in professional development, mentorship, and networking with their community of peers and the broader HHMI community of scientists across career stages.
How much is each award?
Up to 25 Hanna Gray Fellows are selected annually. During the postdoctoral trainee phase, a minimum of 2 years, fellows will receive annual support of a $70,000 salary for the initial year and a $20,000 expense allowance, paid through the training institution. During the faculty phase, fellows will receive $250,000 in research funding and a $20,000 expense allowance per year, maximum of 4 years, paid through the institution where they have attained a faculty position.

December 1, 2021: Applications are due
December 8, 2021: Mentor and reference letters are due

Congratulations and Recognition

|
Joshua A. Budhu, MD, MS, has been named the new Editor of the Neurology® IDEAS specialty section. He begins his term on December 1, 2021. Dr. Budhu is a clinical fellow in neuro-oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA, and a Commonwealth Fund Fellow in Minority Health Policy at Harvard University. Alister Martin, MD, Emergency Medicine physician, has been appointed to the 2021-2022 Class of White House Fellows. This White House Fellowship program embeds professionals from diverse backgrounds for a year of working as a full-time, paid fellow for White House staff, Cabinet Secretaries and other senior government officials. Throughout the year, fellows actively participate in an education program that expands their knowledge of leadership, policy-making and contemporary issues. Martin was placed at the Office of the Vice President and the White House Office of Public Engagement.

Sophia C. Kamran, MD and Rachel Jimenez, MD were selected as a 2021-23 protégés for ASTRO’s Leadership Pipeline Program.
ASTRO is the American Society for Radiation Oncology. The ASTRO Leadership Pipeline Program (formerly known as the Pipeline Protégé Program) is a career development program aimed at increasing diversity among ASTRO leadership, which supports ASTRO's core value of diversity and inclusion.

Yakeel Quiroz, PhD was featured in the Association for Psychological Science. She is an associate professor of psychiatry and neurology at Harvard Medical School. She also directs Massachusetts General Hospital’s Familial Dementia Neuroimaging Lab and Multicultural Alzheimer’s Prevention Program, where she is leading a longitudinal biomarker study of an extended family in Colombia with a gene that causes a unique form of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease that may illuminate the progression and prevention of dementia.
