Hafa Adai Catherine,

This newsletter is a little early this week because we wanted to let you know that the Chamber was advised by Joint Region Marianas that Guam will receive a large crowd of military visitors in time for this weekend. We encourage our businesses to ready themselves for these visitors who are eager to get a taste of our island and our hospitality. We are sure that they will be staying in hotels, renting vehicles, eating at restaurants, shopping in our local establishments, visiting our cultural sites, and more! Let’s welcome them with a warm Hafa Adai and Welcome to Guam!

What a fantastic evening we had last Saturday as we recognized our members celebrating their milestone anniversaries of service to our island in tandem with commemorating our 99th Anniversary. Our planning committee, led by Vice Chairman Ernie Galito and the logistics team put together an awesome experience and we could not have asked for a better evening! We would like to thank our members that celebrated with us, all our sponsors, contributors, supporters, and the Dusit Thani Resort for a night to remember.

Planning for the Chamber’s Centennial Celebration next year has commenced! If you would like to be a part of the planning crew, we’d love to have you! Please send us a note and we will be sure to get you connected with a Centennial activity or program that best suits your interest and talent.

The Armed Forces Committee knocked on many doors in Hawaii and Washington DC last month visiting with key military officials and members of Congress. AFC Chairman Phil Santos will be providing a brief to the AFC Members very soon so be on the lookout for this.

Rear Admiral Benjamin Nicholson will be leaving Guam next month but before he does, he has agreed to speak to our membership one last time. We are fortunate to have him address the general membership at our May 31st general membership meeting at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa. Scroll down this message and be sure to save yourself a seat.

Our Small Business Focus & Development Committee has been busy planning upcoming seminars and the Small Business Expo coming up soon! Be on the lookout in your email box for details on how you and your company can participate in the much-anticipated expo & outreach event and mixer!

Your Chamber participated in last Friday’s legislative round table discussion about the minimum wage for Guam. Raising the minimum wage at this time would not be good for businesses that continue to struggle to keep their doors open. We will continue to work with our senators to express concerns regarding mandates and fees that add to the cost of doing business in Guam. We would also like to thank the Guam Legislature for passing Bill No. 75-37, which appropriates Fifteen Million Dollars from the general fund to establish an assistance program (through GEDA) to support businesses in Guam, that continue to experience hardship from the impact of the pandemic.

Have a great weekend and a Blessed Happy Mother’s Day to our moms and mother figures!

Onward together,

Catherine Castro

President
