International Exchange
Summer Host Families Sought

Recruitment for Host families for this summer's International Exchange has begun! NYS is excited to again be hosting 20 Japanese delegates and 2 chaperones this summer (2021).

There may be concerns about continuing forward with this program and NYS 4-H is in constant contact with the States’ 4-H International team and making every effort to offer this opportunity in the safest way possible. Currently, States’ 4-H International has been forced to suspend all Outbound Programs with the exception of Japan but is hopeful that the Inbound programs will continue as planned following required and recommended safety procedures. There is still a chance that this program could be canceled depending on how the pandemic progresses over the next few months. For more information about the program, you may visit NYS 4-H Website or the States’ 4-H Website.

Homelessness during COVID-19

A year ago, we were hit with a situation that no one could have imagined in their wildest dreams. The pandemic exacerbated already existing problems, like homelessness. In 2019 the number of homeless people in New York on any given night was 92,091. The number has only increased because the pandemic has also affected employment, which unfortunately pushes more people into becoming homeless. In 2019 emergency shelters were only able to provide shelter to 1 in 2 individuals (COVID-19). Due to the pandemic there is a limitation to the number of people that homeless shelters can now hold due to social distancing requirements.

The increase in homelessness also effected the vulnerability of some individuals to Covid. Those at high risk are 65 years and over. Homeless people age faster, and research indicates that their physical condition is of someone 15-20 years older than them. Although the homeless population diminished by 12% since 2007, the pandemic is predicted to have wiped out these achievements.

There is a population that represent the fastest-growing portion of homeless people, women and families. Women have been impacted greatly because of risk factors such as intimate partner violence and eviction. Intimate partner violence is the leading cause of homelessness among women. Women have had to make a choice between choosing homelessness or an abusive partner because hotlines or safety houses for women have been at capacity.

This pandemic has affected many people in different ways, but homelessness was an issue compounded by the pandemic. Although we still have the data to collect for 2020 homelessness, we can only hope that the number hasn’t done too much damage to the success of reducing homelessness. If you would like to help out you can donate to this organization, National Alliance to End Homelessness. They create acts to be passed through legislation, analyze trends in homelessness, while creating solutions, and provide assistance to communities through deliverable solutions. A local organization that you can donate to the Open Door Mission Samaritan House. They provide shelter, warm meals, and laundry services to those in need. Alongside that they provide case management assistance for those looking for permanent housing.
