Sexual Assault Prevention Month
May is Sexual Assault Prevention Month in Ontario. Formerly referred to as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the name was changed in recent years to signify that awareness alone is not enough; action is critical to support sexual assault survivors effectively.

Every person deserves to live free from the fear of sexual assault and to live in communities where all public and private spaces, including workplaces, schools, and homes, support their safety. The sexual assault crisis has gone on far too long, and we all have a responsibility to end it. We must remove the stigma and #BreakTheSilence so that survivors are empowered to seek support, and speak out against it.
National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S
In Canada, we contend with the heartbreaking reality that Indigenous women, girls and members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community experience violence at significantly higher rates than the rest of the population. Indigenous women and girls are over 3x more likely than non-Indigenous women to report having been a victim of a violent crime and over 3.5 times more likely to experience spousal violence.
6 out of 10 incidents of violent crime against Indigenous people are believed to be unreported. There have been over a thousand confirmed cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada, with estimates placing this figure substantially higher.
The National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S, which takes place annually on May 5th, is a day designated to honour these missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited people. Violence against Indigenous women and girls is a systemic and national crisis. We must demand a world where all Indigenous peoples can live their lives free of violence.

Yellow Brick House is committed to learning and raising awareness for the issues that affect Indigenous families in our community, amplifying Indigenous voices, and advocating for change.
Your Impact: Break The Silence Gala
Our Break The Silence Virtual Gala took place on May 6th, 2022. We hope you enjoyed the powerful survivor stories, live auction with Layne The Auctionista, and the incredible entertainment by Jully Black!
With your support, we were able to raise approximately $205,000 to secure beds for women and children in our emergency shelters, surpassing our goal of $150,000!
The need for safe housing is one of the most vital and immediate concerns for survivors of domestic violence. Without support, many survivors are forced to return to dangerous homes. Your support helps to provide a safe place for them to flee violence and access the services they need to move forward and rebuild their lives.

Thank you for helping to save lives!
