Getting Ahead of Stress!

A certain amount of stress is necessary to study productively, be motivated, and accomplish their tasks. However. the negative effects of stress shouldn't change their daily lives. Help your student learn the science of stress and what is an actual versus a perceived threat. Students can learn how to monitor their thoughts and reactions to the perceived threats and better manage the symptoms. In this article, you can learn some approaches that can help disrupt the natural stress response. Here are a few:

1. Make a study schedule.

2. Determine your ideal study spot and times.

3. Hydrate.

4. Fill your brain with good mantras.

It is critical to learn how the mind and body respond to stress and to help them adjust by creating a daily routine of mind and body maintenance practices. Encourage your student to be aware of how they react to stress so they can find ways to balance out their stress response. If your student needs further help, refer them to our mental health resources below or to our CAPS office.

SUMMER CLASSES

By enrolling in classes over the summer, your student can check off those generals they’ve been meaning to take, focus on the more difficult classes, boost their GPA, and speed up their graduation date. FAFSA can cover the summer semester as well so they can use those funds wisely to help them get ahead in school. Plus, summertime in Cedar City can't be beaten! With the world's best backyard to explore and dozens of festivals to attend, there is always something to do.

There is also a SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP available. Click here for more information.

Summer classes can be fun too! We have a wide range of classes like backpacking, climbing, yoga, etc. If your student needs to take generals, there are online options as well! Encourage your student to talk to their academic advisor if they are interested.

TALKING COLLEGE

What are ways to spot phishing scams and false offers targeted at new college students?

1. Make sure all of your computer software is up-to-date and running current versions, including your web browser and anti-virus software.

2. Ensure your accounts on shopping sites are using good account hygiene. Strong passphrases and the use of multi-factor authentication on those sites that support it.

3. On lesser-known websites, do a little research and check the reputability of the site.

4. Be careful of links and attachments in unsolicited emails that potentially could be phishing.

5. Be cautious of what kinds of personal information you provide to a site.

6. Check your account balances often to reconcile charges to actual purchases.

7. Use a credit card instead of a debit card.

8. Make sure the site you visit begins with "https:" instead of "http;". The "s" in "https" stands for secure and uses encrypted methods of transmission.
