May 5, 2023

Hi folks,

It's been a whirlwind lately as we wrapped up our MAP testing and are close to wrapping up our instrumental music concert season. We are fortunate that each of our NBJH band, choir and orchestra groups will be performing for us at an all-school assembly this morning. It's always one of the highlights of the year. If you want to view some or all of it, use the following link: D28 Music Youtube Channel. We plan to begin shortly before 9am and end just before 10am.

On behalf of the entire NBJH staff, we want to extend a sincere thank you for making Staff Appreciation Week so special. From the baseball-themed decorations in the lounge to the breakfast, lunch and daily snacks...our staff truly felt the love shared by our parent community. We appreciate you as well!

Shout Outs

  • Congratulations to our 17 young scientists who participated in last weekend's State Science Fair. NBJH placed third for middle schools and a number of our students earned special awards for their projects. Learn more about the specific details below!
  • A special thank you goes out to Carrie Hughes for her efforts this week in coordinating so many Staff Appreciation activities. Based on how many hours she was here this week, I think she has earned honorary membership as a staff member!
  • Congratulations to Amy Yoon on her National School Orchestra Award. A job well done!

PTO Updates

Our fabulous PTO is still looking for some volunteers for this year and next. Opportunities include:

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we want to do all we can to support our students and community members who may be struggling with various issues. One valuable resource is a local organization -- CATCH -- whose focus is on prioritizing mental health and emotional wellness in kids. Check out the CATCH website for additional information and resources.

Important Information for 2023-2024

  • For our current 6th and 7th grade families, we will once again offer an opportunity for you to provide input about your child as we begin the scheduling process for next year. If you choose to complete the Parent input Form, we ask that you follow the established guidelines and return the form by the May 12 deadline.
  • Families who want to purchase school supply kits in advance can do so now. Online ordering is currently available until May 26. Orders can be placed at www.shopttkits.com using our school account #20308.

NBJH student scientists made their mark Saturday, April 29 at the @IJAS Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair at SIU-Carbondale, bringing home a third-place team trophy along with 12 gold, four silver and one bronze individual award.

Students developed their projects during a semester-long Independent Science Research class mentored by teachers Lauren Johnson, Amber Paull or Fredrick Yoon. They presented their projects to a panel of two judges.

Special awards included:

  • Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge Award: Luke Davidson, Zack Schwarcz, Aaria Mehta, Lily Smolik, and Lily Musselwhite
  • SIU STEM Education Award: Lily Smolik
  • SIU School of Medicine Award: Lauren Yoon
  • Naval Science Award: Henry Gartz

  • EPIC Winners: Aaria Mehta (Biochemestry), Lily Smolik (Zoology)

“Each student did an amazing job at this competition! They have worked hard all year and we are so proud of them,” said Ms. Johnson.
