THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas served as an expert witness for a legal writing class taught by Brian Larson at Texas A&M School of Law on Nov. 2. She attended the class virtually and used the Socratic method to talk about the policies behind reporters’ privilege laws and details of the New Jersey shield law to assist law students in writing briefs.

Associate Professor Teri Finneman and her co-editor Erika Pribanic-Smith received a book contract offer from Routledge for their edited collection, "Social Justice, Activism and Diversity in U.S. Media History."

Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, was invited by the KU School of Engineering to present a workshop on clear, engaging visuals and presentations on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

Eric Thomas presented a session at the Kansas Principals Association on Tuesday, Nov. 16, in Wichita to discuss the protections of the Kansas Student Publications Act. The session was co-presented with two board members from the Kansas Scholastic Press Association and encouraged principals to obey the 1992 law by avoiding censorship of student publications. The KSPA is hosted by the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications, where it supports student journalism through contests, scholarships and conferences.

Assistant Professor Ever Figueroa is presenting two papers at the National Communication Association's annual conference this week in Seattle:
“Structural Hierarchy at Evolution Championship Series 2019: An Ethnographic Participant-Observation of a Fighting Game Esports Event”
“Digital Identity and Embodiment in Esports: Analyzing the Gendered Dimensions of Real and Virtual Bodies in Evolution Championship Series 2019 Media Content”
CEHCUP research featured at Music and the Mind colloquium
Research conducted at the Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Population's (CEHCUP) Experimental Research Media Laboratory (ERML) was featured Nov. 17 during a presentation by Dr. Deanna Hanson-Abromeit, associate professor from the KU School of Music, at the Music and the Mind colloquium. The meeting was part of the Harriman Jewell series of events and featured soprano Renée Fleming, one of the most highly acclaimed sopranos of our time, whose honors include four Grammy awards, the U.S. National Medal of Arts, the Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Award, Germany's Cross of the Order of Merit and France's Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. Fleming has been instrumental in the collaborative efforts between the National Education Association and National Institutes of Health to fund research related to music and health, as well as the establishment of the Sound Health Network. The ERML study, developed by Associate Professors Mugur Geana and Joseph Erba in collaboration with colleagues from the KU School of Music, aims to explore the intersection between persuasive messaging and music used as a conditioning stimulus with the purpose of enhancing engagement with a mediated message.
STUDENT NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES
Student leaders for the spring semester for the University Daily Kansan and Jayhawk Media Group are:
Paul Samberg, a senior from Sandy Hook, Connecticut, will be Kansan editor. Samberg served as opinion editor this fall and worked to re-start the opinion section, which went quiet during COVID-19 with no one on campus. He recently had this opinion piece published in the Kansas Reflector.
Chloe Fuleihan, a sophomore from Olathe, and Grace Sullivan, a senior from Northfield, Illinois, will be co-business managers. Fuleihan oversaw the new Kansan Alumni and Community Relations Division, and Sullivan worked in the wake of COVID-19 to re-start the Sales Division, which is now focused on digital products and services.
As we approach the end of the semester, we want to remind students about the Nutrition Nook in Room 113 in Stauffer-Flint Hall. The Nutrition Nook shelves and refrigerator are fully stocked, and we encourage students to take what they need, especially if they need food over the break. We also have grocery and gas gift cards provided by donors and can help anyone who has specific dietary requirements or other needs. Please contact Associate Dean Scott Reinardy at reinardy@ku.edu, Assistant Dean Frances Lyons at flyons@ku.edu, or email jschool@ku.edu for additional assistance.

The KC Ad Club invites students to participate in the American Advertising Awards, the largest and most representative advertising competition. Through this experience, participating students will get the chance to network with Kansas City’s top advertising professionals, have opportunities for showcasing work locally or nationally, and meet professionals across the country.
