Giving God's Greatest Gift

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." (Luke 6:38)

The holiday season, synonymous with bustling crowds and frenzied shopping, has transformed into a hectic time for both Christians and non-Christians alike. As individuals scurry through stores in pursuit of the perfect (or perhaps not-so-perfect) gifts, the focus often shifts to material possessions wrapped in festive paper. Weeks and months are dedicated to scouring for the latest electronics, the most stylish fashion items, or even the elusive stainless steel cup that has captured the world's attention at every Target. However, this past December brought a unique perspective of Christmas to Living Stones. Instead of succumbing to the commercial chaos, we rediscovered the true essence of giving and the reason behind it.

As we thanked God at the start of each meal for the promise of the birth of a savior, His son, who would be born unto us for the gift of forgiveness, love, and a new life, we were reminded of our mission and why we do what we do. Jesus, the ultimate gift to the world, reminds us and teaches us the profound value of love for one another. This Christmas, amidst the chaos of their own lives, groups within our community recognized the significance of slowing down and extending generosity and love to our neighbors.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible generosity and compassion shown by our dedicated supporters and volunteers. This year, thanks to the efforts of some outstanding groups and individuals, we were able to bring warmth and smiles to the faces of our neighbors in need. We want to extend a special thanks to St. Clair Health, UPS, Mt. Lebanon High School, North Way Christian Community, and the wonderful residents at the apartments at 900 Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon! Their commitment to our community did not go unnoticed, and we are deeply thankful for the time and effort that was dedicated to collecting hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, coats, and socks for our neighbors.

We can look to those who took part in these collections and donations as examples of the spirit of Christmas, as they embodied the essence of giving and love by collecting these donations for our neighbors in need. Their selfless actions have been a tangible expression of God's love, reaching out to our neighbors, who may be strangers to them, and letting them know they are not alone. Due to the generous collection and donation of numerous items, we were able to distribute these gifts over a span of two months. The hats, gloves, scarves, and socks, along with the reusable bags and tumblers we already had for our neighbors, were displayed at every meal for our them to select as Christmas presents through the month of December. They had the option to take one of each item, or simply choose items they desired or needed from the assortment. In January, our neighbors had the opportunity to choose a blanket and a coat if they wished to do so.

In addition to the Christmas gifts that were collected, North Way Christian Community took the lead in organizing a delightful pop-up at our December gathering, and it was nothing short of magical! Their dedication and creativity shone through as they arranged for an incredible 100 dozen cookies to be baked and distributed to our neighbors. The impact of their thoughtful gesture went beyond the delicious treats; the display was a visual feast, radiating warmth and joy. But what made this experience truly special was the genuine engagement with our neighbors. North Way's volunteers not only provided sweet indulgences but also took the time to connect with and uplift the spirits of those they served.

We are continually touched by the love and dedication exhibited by our volunteers and supporters, not just towards Living Stones, but towards every individual who joins us for meals. It's easy to become accustomed to the routine of our Sunday meals or My Monday Thing! and overlook the profound manifestation of God's love happening right in front of us. Living Stones owes its current identity to those who selflessly show up to serve, but more significantly, our essence is shaped by the abundant love and commitment that each volunteer extends to our neighbors. Whether it is donating a warm item over the Christmas season, serving food at our dinners, picking up our food donations, mingling and praying with our neighbors, or simply donating to our ministry, each person offers a gift, and all of these of course come from the greatest gift: love.

Living Stones fosters the cultivation of relationships with neighbors who join us for meals. As relationships develop and deepen, Living Stones volunteers come alongside those individuals and families to assist them in navigating the challenges in their lives and encourage them to find hope in Christ as they learn to trust Him.
