January Students of the Month

TANSEN PATEL-BOSE

CLASS OF 2024

Senior Tansen Patel-Bose is a member of Latin, Math, English, Tri-M, Science, and Social Studies Honor Societies. She has been an editor for the Northern Lights Art and Literary Magazine since her sophomore year. Tansen’s favorite classes at North have included AP Latin, AP Language, AP Literature, AP Calculus, and Concert Choir. She is deeply grateful to Mrs. Mullay, Ms. Carr, Ms. Fedorko, Mr. Halldorson, and Mrs. Cudworth, who imparted to her their love for language, math, and music. Tansen is a cellist and has served as co-principal of the New Jersey Youth Symphony. She currently studies with Alex Croxton, under whom she attended the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival this past summer. She is a leader of Together in Harmony, a student-run music organization which provides virtual concerts to nursing homes across the country. Tansen is also an avid language learner and has studied Chinese, Bengali, Latin, and Spanish. Her favorite memories of North include translating the Laocoon scene of the Aeneid with Mrs. Mullay in Latin and collectively reading the poetry submissions to Northern Lights’ 2022 “Pastel/Impressionism” blog. Tansen appreciates North for having allowed her to meet many wonderful people and to explore diverse disciplines. In the fall, Tansen plans to study Chinese Literature, Economics, and Cello Performance.

ALLISON SY

CLASS OF 2024

Senior Allison Sy is a member of National, Science, Social Studies, and National Art Honor Societies. She is Vice President of National Technical Honor Society and Co-President of French Honor Society. Allison is Co-President of the French Club, is an executive officer of Red Cross, and is a member of Key Club. Her favorite classes at North Hunterdon are Biomed and French. Both subjects have been in her schedule since her freshman year. She loves the community that her Biomed class has built as well as learning about the parts and processes that make us human. As for French, learning a beautiful language is both exciting and rewarding. Outside of school, Allison volunteers at St. Luke’s. One of Allison’s favorite memories at North was participating in Diversity Day. The day provided a mixture of music, food, traditional clothing, contentment, and pride, which created an incredible environment to be in. Allison is appreciative of the day because it allowed her and her peers to share a part of themselves, even if it was through just a bite of food. Next year, Allison plans on majoring in Biology with a Pre-Med track. She says her experience at North has been eye opening in terms of herself and the people around her. Being a student here has made her more conscious and grateful of the small beauties that lie within everyday life.

January Athletes of the Month

ERIN MALOY

CLASS OF 2024

Erin Maloy has been wrestling since her sophomore year. Erin is excited to be in her third year wrestling for North Hunterdon. She wrestles 138/145, and tends to do better wrestling defensively. Erin tried wrestling after her freshman field hockey coach suggested she try the sport. After trying wrestling her sophomore year, she decided it was something she wanted to stick with. Erin likes that everyone on the team has the same job. In other sports, there has always been an offense and defense, where the two sides have a hard time understanding each other and can often blame the other side when things go wrong. None of that happens in wrestling because everyone has the same job and understands the difficulty of it. The team this year is very close and supportive of each other, which is really nice to see. Outside of wrestling, Erin is a member of National Honor Society and Interact Club. She spends a lot of her time in the off-season working with kids. Erin loves working in an after-school program in Whitehouse, for elementary school age kids. She also teaches a CCD class to eighth graders once a week. Erin has applied to several school, but her first choice is the University of Pittsburgh. She plans on majoring in Biology on the pre-med track. She is unsure if she will wrestle in college, but will consider it if the school has an intramural team. Erin has really liked her time at North Hunterdon. Wrestling at North has specifically taught her a lot and prepared her for her future.

MICHAEL SEIFERT

CLASS OF 2024

Michael Seifert is Captain of the Lions Varsity Basketball Team. Michael has been playing basketball competitively for the past 11 years. He has played varsity for the past three years. Last year, Michael averaged 5.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1 assist per game while starting the second half of the season. He has competed for multiple AAU basketball teams and most recently the team United AAU. Michael strongest skills on the court are his leadership, work ethic, and defensive ability. He plays the position of Guard, where he particularly enjoys handling the ball and being the guy to get the offense flowing and getting his teammates shots. Michael says his favorite memory from North comes from the summer when him and his friends would play in the A-Town Throwdown Tournament. He has enjoyed all his classes throughout his four years in school and believes North Hunterdon has the best teachers in New Jersey.

If he had to pick two of his favorite classes, it would be Mr. Lelko’s History class and Mrs. Simpson’s ELA class. Michael also played varsity baseball and varsity football at North. He broke his leg playing football earlier this year, but he has enjoyed his teammates, coaches, and the memories that were made. Michael plans on playing baseball this spring. He is excited to be around his teammates again and looks forward to enjoying the success they will hopefully experience this year. Michael says North Hunterdon has been a place where he has grown, not just as an athlete, but as a person. The school has been extremely welcoming and he has had a lot of enjoyable experiences these past four years. Next year, Michael plans to play basketball at the varsity level. He hopes to attend either TCNJ or Montclair where he will major in Sports Management. Michael is a great leader and teammate. He plays with a lot of heart and spirit and has a bright future ahead of him.

Special Alumni Presentation

On Wednesday, January 17th, Mandi Greenhalgh, a former student of NHHS, who graduated in 2022, visited Mr. Prichett's AP Environmental Science class and discussed a research project she is currently working on. Before attending Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, she took APES during her senior year at North and was always interested in the subject of water.

Mandi’s current research is on two ponds that are part of an estuary. The goal of the project is to monitor changes in the estuary after one dam was removed and another was lowered. She has worked on this project since its beginning. Mandi shared pictures and presented to the class all the work she had accomplished so far. She also answered questions about the college decision process and other college life questions.

Student Accolades & Accomplishments

Hear us ROAR!

Model United Nations Recognitions

The Model United Nations club attended its annual conference this January 2024. The success of this year’s conference was a direct result of the preparation and dedication of each participant, especially conference leaders. This year we were proud to have such leaders in seniors Zoe Jenkins-Hiscox, Hailey LaRuffa, and junior Amelia Reitman. As an elected officer, Zoe served as chair of the World Health Organization (WHO) committee. Zoe worked tirelessly throughout the year preparing committee topics and participating in leadership training activities. At the conference, Zoe confidently led the resolution debate and parliamentary procedure. Hailey and Amelia served as our club’s Youth Secretariats. As a Youth Secretariat, Hailey and Amelia, served as liaisons between our club and the conference. Both Hailey and Amelia helped to communicate important information and prepare North Hunterdon delegates for the conference by helping lead our weekly meetings.

At the conference, North Hunterdon members received several awards and accolades. Junior Sanjana Mandadi was elected as the 2025 officer of the Security Council B committee. Senior Emma Mullay was recognized for her standout performance in Press and received the honorary award of 2024 Premier Delegate. Senior Zoe Jenkins-Hiscox was named as an alternate for the YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs (CONA). Several students received awards for representing the conference’s Premier and Outstanding Countries; junior Lauren Stowers represented the Premier Country of France, junior Ava Spinetti represented the Outstanding Country of Mexico, and Freshmen Anya Karnani and Caiden MacNiven represented the Outstanding Country of South Korea. Last, North Hunterdon was recognized as an Outstanding Delegation.

All Model United Nation participants are recognized for their courage, curiosity, and cooperation. Each member took on the challenge to communicate with others from different schools and states to find solutions to world problems. They did so by honoring the Four Core Values of YMCA: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to NHHS senior Selina Zhang who was formally recognized on January 30th in school for her being named by the Society for Science as one of 40 Finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2024! This is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. Selina was selected for her project titled, ArTreeficial: A Novel AI-Integrated Solution to Reducing Invasive Spotted Lanternfly Populations.

Selina was first selected among 300 scholars who will be awarded $2,000 each, and their schools will be awarded $2,000. Now as she was selected as a Finalist, she will be awarded $25,000 and will compete for even larger awards during a weeklong competition in Washington, D.C. The 40 Regeneron Science Talent Search finalists were chosen from 2,162 applicants from 712 high schools across 46 states, Puerto Rico, and 10 other countries. To read more, please visit https://www.societyforscience.org/press-release/300-teen-scientists-selected-as-regeneron-sts-2024-scholars/

Recognizing Selina were (L-R) Asst. Principal Stacy Ditze, science teacher Felicia Ledogar, Selina, and Principal Dr. Greg Cottrell. Believe in yourself and see what you can achieve as Selina has!!

For over eight decades, the Science Talent Search has rewarded talented high school seniors who dedicate countless hours to original research projects and present their results in rigorous reports that resemble graduate school theses. Collectively, Science Talent Search alumni have received millions of dollars in scholarships and won Nobel Prizes, Fields Medals, MacArthur Fellowships, and many other accolades.

Lion Leadership Summit

At the the inaugural Lions Leadership Summit, student leaders from various service, cultural, and student interest groups met to get to know each other and determine how students can help each other in their mission to support the larger North community. Sponsored by the US Alliance, the team-building activities that students participated in were designed to promote connection and trust and help students explore ways in which they positively impact their school culture.

Bravo!

On Saturday, January 20, ten students from the North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional High School District participated in the Symphonic Honors Band Concert held at Somerville High School after being selected by the Central Jersey Music Educators Association (CJMEA).

Congratulations to the students selected for North Hunterdon High School: Stephen Kotran (flute/piccolo), Rebecca Tsang (flute/piccolo), Cullen Elliott (tenor saxophone), Kayla Blazovic (trumpet), Joshua Evans (trombone), and Mia Henck (clarinet).

Students were nominated for the CJMEA Symphonic Honors Band by school band directors from the Central Jersey region. Selected students met for the first time on Saturday morning January 20th and rehearsed for five hours prior to performing in the concert. The concert consisted of about 85 students from 23 high schools in Central Jersey. The ensemble was conducted by Dr. Julia Baumanis, Associate Professor of Music Education at Rutgers University.

We have all heard the phrase Project Graduation but, some may not know what it truly means so the PTSA has a write-up.

North PTSA Committee for All Night 2024 Graduation Celebration Event

In communities devastated by alcohol-drug related deaths of teens in the 1980’s, a swell of support grew across the United States for sponsoring high school graduation celebrations that were drug and alcohol free. Business sponsors, neighborhood volunteers, community members of all ages planned events for graduating seniors that would last all night & provide memories for a lifetime. They turned pain into purpose and called it Project : Graduation.

At our North Hunterdon High School campus, the PTSA, Parents + Teachers + Students, carry on this tradition in partnership with our surrounding community. Every June approximately 250 North Graduates have celebrated all night together at The FunPlex, an amusement park destination with arcade, sports, and music exclusively for North Grads.

The committee includes adults who have experienced a Project : Graduation as a senior in the 1990’s and are now “paying it forward “ by chaperoning from 8pm to 6am the night of graduation day! Other committee contributors curate prizes, donate funds, or dedicate their time in memory of a classmate, friend, or family member. Please join the North PTSA and volunteer with us for Project : Graduation 2024.

For more information, see our PTSA page on the North HHS website, and for further details please email lynnepfrench@gmail.com
