Summer Paving Project
Although it seems distant, Summer with its requisite seasonal road projects are being finalized. The Township Board has approved the following subdivision streets to be resurfaced during 2023.
The Township has about 108.3 miles of roadways with about 41.6 of these miles being subdivision streets. Since 1987, the Ottawa County Road Commission imposed 100% of the financial responsibility associated with subdivision resurfacing to the Townships and/or residents.

In addition, the Ottawa County Road Commission is scheduled to complete the following projects in 2023:

  • 1.7 miles of Mercury Drive from Comstock Street to 144th Avenue at a cost of about $950,000;
  • 2.0 miles of 152nd Avenue and Groesbeck Street between Lincoln Street at Mercury Drive at a cost of about $1.12 million.

And finally, the Road Commission plans to “chip seal” the following Township roads at a cost of about $377k:

  • 152nd Avenue South of Lincoln Street
  • 168th Avenue South of Buchanan Street
  • Buchanan Street from Lakeshore Drive to US-31
  • Fillmore Street from Hiawatha Drive to US-31
  • Groesbeck Street from 160th Avenue to 152nd Avenue
  • Hiawatha Drive from Lakeshore Drive to Fillmore Street
  • Johnson Street from 168th Avenue east to the end
  • Pierce Street from Lakeshore Drive to 168th Avenue
  • Sleeper Street from 168th Avenue east to the end
  • Warner Street from 168th Avenue to 160th Avenue
  • Winans Street from 168th Avenue to 152nd Avenue

About $3.4 million in road improvement projects will be completed in the Township during in 2023. The following graphs provide some context for road maintenance in the Township.
Paramedic Grant News
The Michigan State Emergency Medical Services (EMS) office provided a grant opportunity to cover paramedic tuition and to pay a wage while staff attended paramedic school.

Unfortunately, there were minimum grant amounts (i.e., the number of paramedics being trained) that was beyond what a small community like Grand Haven Charter Township needed. Specifically, Township would have had to have about five (5) personnel ready to attend Paramedic school … which is beyond the Township′s current need.

That said, after doing some research, the Township teamed up with Trinity EMS to apply for the grant. Trinity has multiple employees which will be sent to school and Trinity was willing to combine their needs with the Township′s needs – forwarding one combined grant application to the State with Trinity being the fiduciary agent.

In January, the Township was informed that the combined grant application was approved. This will immediately assist one part-time Fire/Rescue staff receive a paramedic license and will allow others to complete this important – but expensive – training.
Fire Hydrant Snow Clearance
While not legally obligated, residents are asked to clear snow from fire hydrants near their homes. Clearing snow around hydrants could save our firefighters valuable time during a fire call.

Snow accumulation, and the result of plowing, can completely cover or restrict access to fire hydrants when needed. The few minutes that it takes to remove the snow, could truly make the difference in an emergency.
