Ring Bells, Make Music and Stand Up
for Climate Justice!
Friday, February 11th, 6pm

Ocean River Conservancy, long-time member of the Harvard Square Business Association, is bringing awareness to climate change legislation. On Friday, February 11th at 6pm, please join them as they ring church bells at the First Parish Church and make music on the steps of the Old Cambridge Baptist Church while encouraging our elected officials in Massachusetts to pass the 100% Clean Energy Act.

Strike the bell! Sound the alarm! Join others who care about the climate emergency, environmental justice, and municipal/state planning. BABAM, the Boston Area Battalion Activist Musicians, will be performing on the steps of the OCBC and we encourage you to bring your own instruments and play along!

The recent “code red” report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an alarm call for us all. We’ll ring, clang, drum, and trumpet for eleven minutes on the eleventh day of each month as a symbol of warning.

Now is the eleventh hour for action. It is also a time of hope and opportunity to tread more gently, emit less greenhouse gasses, drawdown and store more greenhouse gasses, restore our water cycles, and care more for those already adversely affected by climate change, especially in the economically poorest neighborhoods.

The Clean Energy Act will require the governor to allocate 50% of climate spending directly to environmental justice communities; undertake restructuring to reform utilities and modernize the grid; and will maximize the economic benefits of increased funding of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Council.

Guest Speaker Event

Love - what a wonderful topic to think about, listen to, and be inspired by!

It is such a tremendous sustaining force in our lives.

On February 20th, we will touch on three kinds of love: love for the self, love for others, and love for God.

Come and be inspired to keep yourself full of love!
Guest Speaker - Dorothy Steinfeld, Director of Programs at Peace Village

Dorothy has been practicing various types of meditation for over fifty years. Her professional life started in the field of education followed by being an account executive in radio, and finally a successful business entrepreneur. Over thirty-six years ago she became interested in the teachings of Raja yoga and short after started teaching and got involved in the various projects and activities of the Brahma Kumaris. Doing so, her early career skills were put to work in the service of humanity. When Peace Village opened, she became a resident and over the years helped to assemble an experienced faculty of spiritual educators for spiritual seekers at all levels.

Lessons from Plants: Free Virtual Book Discussion

Plants are essential to humans and the environment. In Lessons from Plants (Harvard University Press, 2021), Professor Beronda Montgomery, invites us to appreciate the many lessons that can be gained from a better understanding of the ways in which plants grow, adapt, and thrive. In this conversation with Brenda Tindal, Executive Director, Harvard Museums of Science & Culture, Montgomery will address what plants can teach us about relating to one another, building diverse communities, and being resilient.

February 24th, 6pm - 7pm

The “code” to decipher the hieroglyphic writing system was cracked two hundred years ago in 1822 by the brilliant French linguist Jean-François Champollion. In this lecture, Professor Dimitri Laboury will address the question “was every ancient Egyptian artist capable of reading and writing hieroglyphs, and who were the real experts in hieroglyphic writing?”

Behind-the-Screens with Sarah Clunis: Members only virtual event

Located in the Kasaï Oriental Province along the Sankuru River in the central part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Kuba identify themselves as the children of Woot and the tale of their origins is often reenacted in masquerades for the royal Kuba court. The focus of this Black History Month Behind-the-Screens is a conversation with Peabody Curator of African Collections, Sarah Clunis, about three royal Kuba masks—housed at Harvard’s Peabody Museum—that as a triad re-enact the founding of the Kuba kingdom and highlight the significance of gender and status in Kuba political systems and Kuba life.
Space is limited, register today! Registration closes Friday, February 25th.
