Zanker, Russell student artists honored after winning selections in Young Artist Showcase
Zanker Elementary School sixth grader Joanna Lee and Thomas Russell Middle School seventh grader Anita Kwong were both honored by the MUSD Board of Education and District Leadership after their artwork was among the winning selections in the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) annual Young Artist Showcase.

Joanna Lee received the People's Choice Award (6th grade) for her piece, "Connecting through Knowledge," while Anita Kwong received the People's Choice Award (7th grade) for her piece, "Let's Catch Up!"

This year's artwork theme of “Contact Zones: Places Where We Meet" encourages students to show experiences of places or events where different cultures, languages, or interests may come together.
  
EXCLUSIVE PROGRAM
MUSD shares outcomes from SCCOE's culturally-responsive teaching pilot program
Milpitas Unified School District was one of only three school districts to take part in a pilot project with the Santa Clara County Office of Education, which was recently awarded the National Science Foundation’s 2021 Computer Science for All Grant. The SCCOE partnered with Krause Center of Innovation, San José State University College of Science Center for STEM Education, and WestEd to provide professional learning opportunities in mathematics and computational thinking to teachers of 4th and 5th grade students.

At MUSD, as well as Berryessa and Orchard school districts, they explored practices in creating effective math lessons that are culturally relevant and engaging to all students, with a specific emphasis on Latinx and Latina-identifying students.”

On Tuesday, Randall Elementary World Language School co-principal Claudia Cadenas and Randall 4th Grade Teacher Cecilia Carrillo, along with Krause Center Director Justin Sewell, shared this presentation with the Board and community on how the pilot program played out in MUSD.

Student Board Reps Sydney Hoang (Milpitas HS), Mira Bhakta (Middle College HS) and Kimberly Lopez (Calaveras Hills HS) were recognized by the Board of Education and District leadership for their service as Student Board Reps on the Board of Education.

Hailong Shen and Kansen Chu were recognized by the Board of Education and District leadership for their table tennis donation to Milpitas Unified School District.

VIDEO RESOLUTIONS
Milpitas HS True Colors Club produces video reading of Pride Month 2022 Resolution
Milpitas High School True Colors Club student members produced a video reading of Resolution 2022.44 Encouraging the Celebration of the Month of June as LGBTQ Pride Month, which was unanimously adopted by the MUSD Board of Education at the June 14 meeting.

MUSD announces new management team
hires for 2022-23 school year
Milpitas Unified School District’s Board of Education approved two new team members at its June 14 meeting, with new addition Jillian Valdez joining the team as Program Manager, Student Services and Special Education; and Journeyman Abner Ames earning a promotion to Supervisor, Mechanical & Electrical, HVAC/Locks/Paint/Maintenance.

Valdez, who holds a Masters in Education Administration from CSU Northridge and Masters in Special Education from Loyola Marymount University, spent 10 years with Los Angeles Unified School District as an Area Assistant Principal overseeing special education at three schools, and Special Education Program Specialist.

“It does feel wonderful to join a district that is dedicated to the Culture of We and inclusion, and uplifting not only the academic growth and achievement of students but also their social and emotional well-being,” said Valdez, a Mission San Jose High School alumna. “I am really thrilled to be coming home and serving youth in communities that are similar to mine.”

Ames, in his sixth year with MUSD’s Maintenance, Operations and Transportation Team, previously owned his own facilities company and worked for the City of San Jose.

“Under this new role, I’m looking forward to being of service to our learners, to our teachers and to our staff, so we can provide places that are safe, comparable and conducive to learning and teaching,” Ames said. “We have a wonderful team.”
Learning and Development Team introduces Universal Pre-Kinder Program Expansion
Learning and Development's Coordinator of Literacy/Intervention/EL Yvonne Sugimura led the Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program Expansion presentation, which included the California 3-part plan, the current program in MUSD, and the plan for the future.
After School Care Access
Led by Learning and Development's Coordinator of Literacy/Intervention/EL Yvonne Sugimura, staff shared an After School Care Access presentation with the Board and community.

Aligned with Assembly Bill 130, Expanded Learning programs are pupil-centered, results driven, include community partners, and complement, but do not replicate, learning activities in the regular school day and school year. All local educational agencies offer all unduplicated pupils in classroom-based instructional programs access to comprehensive after school and intersessional expanded learning opportunities.

The Board of Education approved the following education items at the June 14, 2022 board meeting:
